Men's Soccer downs UW-Platteville in penalty kicks to advance in C2C Tournament

SALISBURY, Md. – The quarterfinal round of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Tournament went to penalty kicks and the sixth-seeded Salisbury University men's soccer team prevailed in a battle with the third-seed Wisconsin-Platteville Pioneers, 7-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sea Gulls had a great chance to get on the board early. Conner Appleby sent a through ball into the box and Ethan Dolezal sent a one-timer toward the net. Unfortunately for the Sea Gulls, the ball bounced just wide of the net leaving the game scoreless.
  • The Pioneers had their best chance to score in the first half in the 27th minute. On a corner kick, Brant Mueller sent a head that was headed into the bottom-right corner, but a Sea Gull defender blocked the shot before the ball could cross the line.
  • After a heavily fought defensive battle in the second half, the Pioneers looked to break the scoreless tie. Danny Gutzwiller sent a cross into the box and Lucas Godon headed the ball toward the net, but Ryan Socks made the save to force overtime.
  • In the 98th minute, the Sea Gulls looked for a chance to break the tie before the second overtime period. George Fotiou sent a long pass to the left side of the box to a streaking Appleby. Appleby then sent a quick pass to Brady Young, who then sent a one-timer toward the net, but the Pioneers goalkeeper made the save.
  • Both teams in the second overtime period locked down on defense and forced penalty kicks.
  • Both teams were tied 6-6 in penalty kicks after the seventh round. Dolezal scored the goal to put the Sea Gulls up one. Brant Mueller took the eighth round for the Pioneers and sent the shot to the bottom-left corner of the net. Socks made an incredible diving save to seal the Sea Gull win and advance them to the semifinal round.
