Women’s Basketball blitzes VWU, 77-36, in season opener

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team uncorked the new campaign in dominant fashion, torching the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins, 77-36, on Wednesday night at the Maggs Physical Activities Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Emily Dilger opened the scoring with a layup two minutes in, and the Sea Gulls eventually took a 6-0 lead on jumpers from Ashlynn Burrows and Dilger. The Marlins settled in, though, and trimmed the deficit to 10-9 on a pair of Sarah Ellis free throws with 3:00 to go.
  • Burrows answered with a jumper and SU eventually rebuilt the lead to 17-11 after an Alex Bull bucket with 21 seconds left. Ellis responded with a jumper for VWU, bringing the first quarter to an end with Salisbury on top 17-13.
  • The Sea Gulls turned up the defensive pressure during a second quarter that saw them outscore VWU 22-4. Leading 19-15 at the 8:23 mark, Burrows sank the first of back-to-back layups that sparked a 10-0 run. Burrows scored eight of the 10 points herself on the way to boosting the advantage to 29-15 with 6:07 to go.
  • After the Marlins broke up the run with a two, Salisbury went on another 10-0 run to close out the period. Kolby Brown scored four of the 10 points, and a long straightaway two from Ainsley Raybold gave SU a 39-17 lead heading into halftime.
  • Burrows opened the third quarter with a jumper to make it 41-17. Leading 52-25 later on, Dilger, Burrows and Bull connected on twos as part of a 6-0 run that made it 58-25 at the 3:08 mark.
  • VWU netted four in a row on two pairs of free throws, but Sym Deloatch countered with a late layup that rebuilt the advantage to 60-29 at the end of the third.
  • Brown, Dilger and Emma Wivell drained buckets as part of a 6-0 run to open the fourth quarter, making it 66-29. The Sea Gulls went 40 points clear with 2:50 to go after a Deloatch layup that made it 75-34.
  • SU led by as many as 42 late before a Kayla Nieberlein free throw with 57 seconds left gave the game its final 77-36 margin.
