No. 1 Men's Lacrosse downs St. Mary's, 19-14

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 1 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team fended off a late rally to take down the St. Mary's Seahawks, 19-14, on Monday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Sea Gulls offense started the game on a 4-0 run, led by a first-quarter hat trick by Jarrett Bromwell.
  • The Seahawks answered the early Sea Gull run with two goals from Aiden Doyle and PJ Fenchak.
  • The Sea Gulls got back on the board with a buzzer-beater by Isaac Thrasher at the end of the first quarter to give the maroon and gold a 5-2 lead.
  • The Seahawks opened the second quarter with an Abe Hubbard goal before Salisbury went on a two-goal run with goals by Logan Posner and Jack Dowd early in the second.
  • would answer right back with a goal from Abe Hubbard by Jude Brown.
  • After a Doyle goal at the 10-minute mark, Salisbury jumped out to a three-goal run to take a 10-4 lead midway through the second. The run was highlighted by back-to-back Posner goals and capped by a Cross Ferrara tally that gave SU the six-goal advantage.
  • After the Seahawks goal, the Sea Gulls answered with two more goals from Logan Posner by Ham McPartland and Jack Dowd from Cross Ferrara.
  • Jude Brown put away three goals in the final six minutes of the quarter to cut the Salisbury lead to 11-7 at the half.
  • The Sea Gulls opened the second half on fire with a 5-1 run. The run was highlighted by two Ferrara and Thrasher goals that helped push Salisbury up eight, 16-8, in the third.
  • Salisbury and St. Mary's traded goals to close out the third quarter. Thrasher's goal with 19 seconds left in the third put SU ahead 18-10.
  • St. Mary's scored four goals in the final quarter to trim the Salisbury lead but it was too little, too late as Salisbury iced the game in the final moments.

 SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Cross Ferrara led the Sea Gulls with seven points on three goals and four assists. Ferrara sits just six goals away from Jason Coffman's mark of 249 career goals.
  • Isaac Thrasher finished with five goals and an assist.
  • Jarrett Bromwell, Logan Posner, and Jack Dowd each finished with five points. Bromwell and Dowd each finished a hat trick and two assists. Posner added in five goals.
  • The Sea Gulls finished 26-of-37 in faceoffs. Ham McPartland went 23-of-30 with a game-high 13 ground balls.  Eoghan Sweeney added in three faceoff wins with two ground balls.
  • John DeFazio led the defense with five ground balls and a caused turnover
  • Z.J. Shahin picked up the win in net. Jack Twomey earned time in net and recorded three saves.

 

ST. MARY'S GAME NOTES

  • Jude Brown led the Seahawks with seven points with four goals and three assists.
  • Aiden Doyle added in five goals.
  • The Seahawks went 11-37 in faceoffs. Sam Jaudon won eight faceoffs with three ground balls. 
  • Brock Daniel and Jude Brown caused two turnovers each.
  • Kyrle Preis started in net for the Seahawks and recorded 16 saves.

UP NEXT

  • Salisbury will travel to Newport News, Va. on Saturday, April 16 against conference rival No. 2 Christopher Newport.
  • The battle of the two top teams in the nation is scheduled for 4 p.m.
