No. 1/2 Men's Lacrosse rolls past Stockton 22-13, in NCAA second round

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 1/2 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team rolled to a 22-13 over the Stockton Ospreys in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Sea Gulls opened the scoring with a 3-0 run, highlighted by a Charlie White goal with assist from Jack Dowd at the 7:10 mark.
  • The Ospreys quickly answered with two goals less than a minute apart from Dante Poli and Ryan Anderson, getting back within 3-2.
  • The Sea Gulls went back to work with a 3-1 scoring run over the next four minutes, capped by a Joe Carozza strike from Dowd to make it 6-3.
  • The two teams traded goals to end the first quarter with Cross Ferrara scoring with 1:09 remaining to give the Sea Gulls a 7-4 lead.
  • The Stockton offense opened the second quarter with a goal from Reegan Capozzoli to cut the deficit to 7-5, but the Sea Gulls answered Stockton's quick goal with two more from Logan Posner and Isaac Thrasher to push it back to 9-5.
  • The Ospreys would not go away, though, as Sean Haddock added two straight goals to cut the Sea Gulls lead to 9-7 at the 7:47 mark of the second.
  • Goals by Thrasher and Ferrara boosted the Sea Gull lead back to four at 11-7 with 4:23 remaining in the second.
  • The Ospreys once again would add two more goals before the half, but Posner found White for a tally and the Sea Gulls closed out the half leading 12-9.
  • The Sea Gull offense got a little help from the defense to open the third quarter as Thomas Ballard found the back of the net, starting a 5-0 run that made it 17-9 at the 6:29 mark.
  • The Ospreys closed out the quarter with a 3-1 run, highlighted by an Eric D'Arminio goal to reduce the Sea Gull lead to 18-12.
  • Salisbury outscored the Ospreys 5-1 in the fourth quarter, with Josh Sanchez punctuating the scoring in the final minute to close out the 22-13 win.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Cross Ferrara led the Sea Gulls with seven points on five goals and two assists. With his goal in the third quarter, Ferrara passed Max Tennant and Austin Stewart (262) for the second-most career goals in NCAA Division III men's lacrosse history.
  • Jack Dowd added in six points, scoring one goal and dishing out five assists.
  • Isaac Thrasher and Charlie White each scored four goals.
  • The Sea Gulls finished 20-of-38 on faceoffs. Ham McPartland went 13-19 at the X with a game-high 10 ground balls. Drew Downing added six faceoff wins with four ground balls.
  • Zack Timmons led the Sea Gull defense with four caused turnovers and two ground balls.
  • James Gilfillan chipped in four caused turnovers and four ground balls on defense.
  • John DeFazio scooped up four ground balls and caused a turnover.
  • Z.J. Shahin earned the win in net with four saves.

STOCKTON GAME NOTES

  • Sean Haddock led the Ospreys with four goals.
  • Eric D'Arminio had four points, netting a goal and three assists.
  • Reegan Capozzoli added in a hat trick.
  • The Ospreys went 18-of-38 on faceoffs. Tyler Horvath won all 18 faceoffs for the Ospreys with six ground balls.
  • Brendan Scanlon led the Osprey defense with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
  • Eric Lindskog started in the cage and recorded 11 saves.

UP NEXT

  • The Sea Gulls will face No. 9/12 Cabrini in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. The Cavaliers bested Washington & Lee 14-8 in their second-round matchup on Saturday.
  • Salisbury faced Cabrini on the road on Apr. 22, erasing a 9-6 deficit in the final two minutes to win 10-9 in double overtime.
  • Opening faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. with coverage on the Sea Gull Sports Network (SGSN) beginning at 2:40 p.m.
