PREVIEW: No. 1/2 Men's Lacrosse hits the road to battle No. 4 Tufts in National Quarterfinals

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The No. 1/2 Salisbury University men's lacrosse team will hit the road for the national quarterfinals on Saturday, May 21 against the fourth-ranked Tufts Jumbos. The game is set for a 3 p.m. start in Rochester, N.Y. and hosted by RIT.

HOW WE GOT HERE

  • The Sea Gulls opened the tournament with a 22-13 win over Stockton on Saturday before erasing a first-quarter deficit to take down the 12th-ranked Cabrini Cavaliers, 13-8.
  • Since head coach Jim Berkman took over the helm in 1989, the Sea Gulls are 6-4 in road games in the NCAA Tournament.
  • The offense is led by C2C Offensive Player of the Year Cross Ferrara. Ferrara leads the team in points (114) and goals (87). Ferrara has been dominant so far in the NCAA Tournament with 15 points on 11 goals and four assists in the two Sea Gull wins.
  • On defense, the Sea Gulls are paced by All-C2C First Team selection John DeFazio, who leads the Sea Gulls with 35 caused turnovers and ranks second on the team with 88 ground balls.
  • Salisbury looks to C2C Tournament Most Valuable Player Z.J. Shahin to stop opponents' shots. Shahin stepped up in net during the third-round win over No. 12 Cabrini with 13 saves and held the Cavalier offense to only three second-half goals.

HOW THEY GOT HERE

  • Tufts finished the regular season with a 16-2 record and won the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), 20-11. over No. 9 Bowdoin.
  • The Jumbos have dominated so far in the NCAA Tournament with two big wins. Tufts defeated Norwich 33-10 in the second-round of the NCAA Tournament.
  • Tufts then went on to defeat No. 4 St. John's Fisher, 22-8 in the third round to advance to the Elite Eight.
  • The Jumbos are 8-1 on the road this season.
  • After the offensive explosions to start the NCAA tournament, Tufts has moved to first in NCAA Division III in scoring offense, with 20.70 goals per game. 
  • The Jumbos defense is ranked 144th in the country with 11.90 goals allowed per game.

SCOUTING THE JUMBOS

  • Dynamic attacker, Mac Bredahl leads the Jumbos with 136 points on the season with 67 goals and 69 assists. Bredahl leads the NCAA in points per game with 6.80.
  • Jack Boyden leads the Jumbos in goals, with 76 and has dished out 44 assists.
  • Parker Merril takes the majority of faceoffs with a 62.1 faceoff win percentage on the season.
  • Kyle Adelmann leads the Jumbos defense with 45 caused turnovers and 82 ground balls.
  • Conner Garzone has tallied 232 saves and allowed 208 goals for a 52.7 save percentage and a 11.98 goals-against average.

WHAT'S ON THE LINE

The winner of Saturday's contest will take on the RIT/Bowdoin winner on Sunday, May 22 in the NCAA Tournament Semifinals. Opening faceoff for the semifinal matchup is scheduled for 3 p.m.
