No. 3 Men's Lacrosse captures second-straight C2C title with 15-10 win over No. 1 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The third-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team used a dominant second half to avenge its only regular-season loss to collect its second-straight Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Championship with a 15-10 victory over top-ranked Christopher Newport on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams combined for 12 goals in the first quarter.
  • The Captains opened the scoring in the first minute of the game with a goal from Coby Auslander.
  • The Sea Gulls offense went on the attack with a three-goal run with two Jack Dowd goals and a Charlie White tally that gave the Sea Gulls the 4-1 lead.
  • The Captains answered with a goal from Dylan Rice, but the Sea Gulls added two more goals from Logan Posner and Luke Nestor to push the score to 5-2 with five minutes left in the first.
  • The Captains went on a quick two-goal run with scores from Dylan Rice and Andrew Cook that reduced the Sea Gull lead to 5-4.
  • The Sea Gulls pushed their lead back to two, 6-4, as Dowd recorded a first-quarter hat trick.
  • The Captains then went on a 4-0 run that stretched the end of the first quarter to five minutes into the second quarter. The run was finished off by the second goal of the day from Cook that gave the Captains an 8-6 lead with 10 minutes left in the half.
  • Goals by Cross Ferrara and Joe Carozza evened the score at eight midway through the second quarter.
  • The Captains retook the lead with just over six minutes left in the first half with a Brady Altobello goal and CNU held a 9-8 lead at the half.
  • The two teams traded defensive stands to begin the second half. Salisbury broke through the CNU defense with a two-goal run. Isaac Thrasher nodded the game at nine at the midway point of the third. A minute later, a Jarrett Bromwell strike gave Salisbury the 10-9 lead with five minutes left in the quarter.
  • The Sea Gulls continued the run into the fourth with five unanswered goals, which was capped off by Posner's third goal of the day in the waning moments of the game that gave Salisbury its largest lead of the game, 15-9.
  • The Captains added a goal with 14 seconds left but the Sea Gulls won the ensuing faceoff to lock up the conference crown.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • It is the 24th conference championship in program history.
  • Jack Dowd led the Sea Gulls with six points on four goals and two assists.
  • Logan Posner tallied four points on a hat trick and an assist.
  • Cross Ferrara scored two goals and dished out an assist.
  • The Sea Gulls finished 11-of-29 in faceoffs. Eoghan Sweeney and Drew Downing each won five faceoffs.
  • Z.J. Shahin stopped nine shots in net, seven of which came in the second half.  
  • James Gilfillan led the defense with four caused turnovers and four ground balls.
  • Thomas Ballard finished with three caused turnovers and a ground ball.
  • Jackson Woodward scooped up four ground balls and caused a turnover.
  • John DeFazio also picked up four ground balls.

 

CNU GAME NOTES

  • Andrew Cook led the Captains with four points on two goals and two assists.
  • Dylan Rice and Colby Auslander each scored two goals.
  • The Captains went 18-29 in faceoffs. Warner Cabaniss went 18-27 with a game-high 13 ground balls.
  • Max Wayne and Burke Widhelm led the Captain defense with three caused turnovers each.
  • Zac Hanway started in net for the Captains with 11 saves.

  • Salisbury will await an at-large selection to the NCAA Tournament. The selection show is scheduled to air on Sunday, May 8 at 9:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
