SETTING THE STAGE
- The Sea Gulls are the defending national champions and are playing in their seventh Division III College World Series in program history (2001, '04, '11, '14, '15, '21, '22).
- Salisbury is the only team from the 2021 College World Series to make it back to Cedar Rapids in 2022. SU is seeking to become the first team to win back-to-back Division III national titles since Marietta in 2011-12.
- SU is playing in its 22nd consecutive NCAA Tournament and 27th overall, extending the second-longest active streak in Division III. After earning the Pool B at-large bid, the Sea Gulls won the Granville, Ohio Regional as the two-seed, besting hosts Denison 4-2 and 3-1 on the regional's final day. SU then hosted Wooster in the Super Regionals, emerging triumphant in a wild 18-16 winner-take-all finale.
- The Sea Gulls are the only team in Cedar Rapids with two D3baseball.com First-Team All-Americans in outfielder Kavi Caster and pitcher Jimmy Adkins. Adkins was also named D3baseball National Pitcher of the Year.
THE MAGNIFICENT (OTHER) SEVEN
- Fourth-seeded Salisbury is playing in a four-team pool with top-seeded Marietta, fifth-seeded Wisconsin-Stevens Point and eighth-seeded Catholic. The other group of four includes second-seeded Eastern Connecticut State, third-seeded LaGrange, sixth-seeded Trinity (Texas) and seventh-seeded Baldwin Wallace. Every team except for Catholic was nationally ranked in the final regular season D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25 poll; their rankings are reflected in the bullet points below.
- Top-ranked Eastern Connecticut State makes its 13th trip to the CWS and first since 2007. The Warriors are riding an 18-game winning streak after steamrolling their way to the Little East Conference championship, the Rochester, N.Y. Regional and a home Super Regional over Rowan, punching their ticket 7-6 over the Profs in 13 innings.
- Second-ranked Marietta returns to the CWS for the 23rd time and first since completing back-to-back title runs in 2011-12. The Pioneers enter the championship on an eight-game winning streak after sweeping the Ohio Athletic Conference, Marietta Regional and Marietta Super Regional over Oswego State.
- Fourth-ranked LaGrange makes its first appearance in the CWS. The Panthers cruised to the USA South championship and swept a best-of-five LaGrange Regional over Centenary before winning a dramatic LaGrange Super Regional finale over Chapman, 4-2. Salisbury faced LaGrange in the High Point, N.C. Regional in 2021, winning 7-6 on a walk-off two-run single by Sky Rahill.
- Twelfth-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point is making its sixth CWS appearance and first since 2013. The Pointers won the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship and the Stevens Point Regional before sweeping conference rival UW-Whitewater in the Whitewater Super Regional.
- Fifteenth-ranked Trinity is back at the CWS for the third time and first since winning the 2016 national championship. The Tigers grabbed an at-large bid from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and won a best-of-five Regional at Texas-Dallas in four games before upsetting hosts Birmingham Southern in a two-game Super Regional sweep.
- Twenty-first-ranked Baldwin Wallace is back in the CWS for the second time in program history and first time since 2014. The Yellow Jackets earned an at-large bid out of the Ohio Athletic Conference, won three straight at the Brockport, N.Y. Regional and swept hosts Endicott in the Super Regionals.
- Unranked Catholic has earned its first-ever trip to the CWS. The Cardinals grabbed an at-large bid from the Landmark Conference, upset hosts Shenandoah in Regionals and won two straight Super Regional games at Ithaca. The Sea Gulls and Cardinals were scheduled to play each other in late April, but the game was rained out multiple times.
