Second-half shutout propels Football over Ave Maria, 42-14

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University football team bounced back in a big way with a 42-14 victory over the Ave Maria Gyrenes on Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter
  • Salisbury scored first on a 99-yard touchdown drive. Andre Matthews got the Sea Gulls out of the shadow of their own end zone on a 54-yard run. Six plays later, Matthews connected with Hunter Cleaver on a 24-yard touchdown catch with just over three minutes to go in the first.
  • Ave Maria drove down the field to the edge of the red zone on its ensuing possession. Kristain Marks' pass was intercepted in the end zone by Caleb Brubaker.
Second Quarter
  • Ave Maria capitalized on back-to-back SU turnovers to take the 14-7 lead midway through the second. The Gyrenes scored on runs plays by Quino Mauricette and Bryan Stiemke.
  • After a good kickoff return by Dario Belizaire set up Salisbury near midfield, the Sea Gulls marched down the field in five plays on a Jaden Davis seven-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 14 with just over two minutes to go.
  • Salisbury forced an Ave Maria three-and-out and looked to score in the waning moments of the first half but the Sea Gulls were stonewalled at the one-yard line as time expired.
Third Quarter
  • Brock Keeler opened the second half with an interception on Ave Maria's first possession of the third quarter.
  • Salisbury capitalized on the turnover to take the 21-14 lead. David Fletcher set up a goal-to-go situation on a 27-yard run. Two plays later, Belizaire crossed the goal line from one yard out.
  • Back-to-back long runs doubled Salisbury's lead near the end of the quarter. Davis broke off a 45-yard run before Joey Bildstein scored on a 23-yard touchdown run on the next play to give the Sea Gulls the 28-14 lead.
Fourth Quarter
  • The Salisbury defense forced a turnover on downs to open the fourth quarter. Runs by Fletcher and Belizaire set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Baebaa Sayeh to push Salisbury's lead to 21 points, 35-14.
  • The two teams traded interceptions before Salisbury iced the game midway through the fourth quarter with another Sayeh touchdown run to extend Salisbury's lead to 42-14.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Salisbury notched 535 yards of total offense, including 482 yards on the ground.
  • Jaden Davis and David Fletcher each set career-highs in rushing. Davis recorded 155 rushing yards and a touchdown while Fletcher notched 125 yards on nine totes.
  • Baebaa Sayeh tallied a pair of rushing touchdowns on four carries for 32 yards.
  • Joey Bildstein recorded 65 rush yards on 11 carries.
  • Andre Matthews had a passing touchdown and ran for 52 yards.
  • The Salisbury defense shut out Ave Maria in the second half and limited the Gyrenes to 89 yards of offense in the second.
  • Jimmy Celentano had a game-high 11 tackles, including a half sack.
  • Caleb Brubaker, Brock Keeler, Ryan Muller and Nero Schrader each picked off a pass. Brubaker and Keeler each collected six tackles while Ryan Muller had five stops.
  • Andrew Petrino made all six of his extra-point attempts.
AVE MARIA GAME NOTES
  • Joshua Jenkins led the Ave Maria offense with 88 receiving yards on eight catches.
  • Bryan Stiemke carried the ball seven times for 61 yards and a touchdown.
  • Kristain Marks was 16-for-24 for 126 yards but was intercepted twice and sacked twice.
  • Brian Galasso led the Ave Maria defense with 10 tackles and an interception.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury will wrap up the non-conference slate on Saturday, Sept. 24 as they head north to take on the Western New England Golden Bears.
  • Kickoff from Springfield, Mass. is scheduled for noon.
