Women’s Soccer drops midweek match to No. 25 Va. Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team dropped its midweek matchup to the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins, 1-0, on Wednesday evening in Virginia Beach, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Both teams exchanged shots and possession throughout the first half.
  • Salisbury's best look came in the 25th minute after a Sea Gull corner kick. Autumn Conway shot a header that the keeper was just able to redirect off the crossbar for the save.
  • Virginia Wesleyan got on the board after Molly Gobble scored a goal in the 44th minute which gave the Marlins the 1-0 advantage going into halftime.
  • The Sea Gulls continued to apply pressure in the second half. Conway had another good look off a corner kick but the Marlins keeper was able to knock away the attempt safely.
  • With under a minute to go, Salisbury had another look at the goal from Katy Poltrack after she fielded a corner and ripped a shot that was blocked in the box, but the effort was not enough and the game ended with a score of 1-0.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Salisbury outshot Virginia Wesleyan, 24-9.
  • Salisbury 14 shots on goal compared to Virginia Wesleyan's three.
  • Nine different Sea Gulls had shots on goal.
  • Autumn Dougherty led the Sea Gulls with five shots and three shots on target.
  • Riley Pinato earned the start and tallied two saves in goal.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN GAME NOTES
  • Molly Gobble scored the lone goal for the Marlins.
  • Gobble and Shyenne Diaz led the team with two shots each.
  • Rachel Quiqley earned the win and tallied 11 saves in goal.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury will host the DeSales Bulldogs on Saturday, Sept. 24.
  • Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Sea Gull Soccer Stadium.
