Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Second-half comeback propels Men’s Soccer over Cairn, 2-1

LANGHORNE, Pa. - Salisbury University men's soccer head coach Zack MacDougall earned his first SU win as the Sea Gulls toppled the Cairn Highlanders, 2-1, on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cairn scored first in the 16th minute on a corner kick. Moses Beers' corner found Tyler Skaer's head in the box for the opening goal of the contest.
  • Salisbury threatened on a Connor Appleby strike in the 22nd minute but his low liner was caught by the keeper.
  • Early in the second half, the Sea Gulls looked like they scored in the 52nd minute. Sean Barwick's ball did go in the net but the referees ruled he was offside to keep the Cairn lead intact.
  • Salisbury benefited from an own goal on a centering pass by David Peters that was deflected into the net to tie the game at one in the 57th minute.
  • A foul in the box gave Salisbury a penalty kick in the 81st minute. Appleby stepped up and sunk the penalty to push SU ahead, 2-1.
  • Cairn pressed to tie the game in the closing stages on the game. As time expired, Josh Goodyear's shot was stonewalled by Skylar McCarthy.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Connor Appleby scored the game-winning goal on the penalty kick in the 81st minute.
  • Skylar McCarthy made nine stops for the Sea Gulls to earn his first collegiate win.
  • Both sides took 13 shots.
  • Salisbury tallied 10 corner kicks.
  • Appleby and Sean Barwick each had two shots on target.
CAIRN GAME NOTES
  • Tyler Skaer scored the lone goal for Cairn.
  • Chris Eelman notched six saves.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury returns to the Island on Wednesday, Sept. 28 against the St. Mary's Seahawks.
  • Opening kickoff from Sea Gull Soccer Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
