SALISBURY, Md. – A late push by the Salisbury University men's soccer team fell short, as the Sea Gulls dropped their home opener against the Shenandoah Hornets on Saturday, 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Sea Gull offense got a great opportunity in the ninth minute as David Peters sent a cross into the box to Ethan Dolezal. Dolezal made a move past a defender and looked to have an open shot at goal but a sliding Hornet defender got a piece of the ball and the shot went wide.
- After some back-and-forth play, the Sea Gulls earned a great chance to break the scoreless tie in the 41st minute. Michael Reid sent a deep ball from the midfield line to a streaking George Fotiou just outside the box with just the goalkeeper to be, but Fotiou sailed the shot attempt high over the net.
- In the 58th minute, the Hornets broke the tie on a Connor Robles cross that Niclas Vavra tapped in right in front of the net.
- The Hornets did not waste any time padding their lead with another goal just two minutes later. Vavra sent a ball through the Sea Gull defense and Nathan Yared sent the shot off the right post and into the back of the net.
- The Sea Gull offense looked to answer the Hornets. In the 78th minute, Joesph Ennas sent a ball into the box and Connor Appleby made an unbelievable play, gathering the ball and nailing a bicycle kick shot into the back of the net to pull the Sea Gulls within one.
