Defensive battle goes against Women’s Soccer at York

YORK, Pa. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team dropped its midweek matchup to the York Spartans, 1-0, in a defensive battle that came down to the final minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Salisbury dominated possession in the first half with eight shots compared to York's one in the first half.
  • The Sea Gulls first quality look came in the 17th minute when Kyla Holt had a step on her defender and ripped a shot just high and right off target.
  • Salisbury looked to strike again with just under four minutes left in the half. Claire Vollmer ripped a shot from just outside the box, but the keeper was able to corral it to keep the game scoreless going into halftime.
  • Both teams jostled for possession to begin the second half. The Sea Gulls threatened in the 69th minute, Zakiyyah McMillan fielded a bouncing cross and tapped her shot just wide of the goal and the match remained tied at zero.
  • In the 78th minute, Autumn Dougherty broke away from the defense and set up Kristen Ging in front of the goal, but her shot missed just over the cross bar to keep everything knotted.
  • York broke through for the first score of the game when Abby Brown fielded a long pass from Erin Snyder and proceeded to knock it in to make it 1-0 in the 81st minute.
  • With just over two minutes left to play, Salisbury had one last look at the goal. Holt sent a cross in front of the goal and Ging tried to nail a header past the keeper, but Jacqueline Keogh came up with a great diving save to secure the win for the Spartans.
