Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Strong first half propels Men’s Basketball past Apprentice School, 76-52

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University men's basketball returned to the win column after dominating both sides of the ball to cruise to a 76-52 victory over the Apprentice School Builders on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Salisbury opened up the game with a 19-2 scoring run that was capped off by a corner three from Greg Bloodsworth with just over 14 minutes to play in the half.
  • After some back-and-forth over the next few minutes, Shawn Eley made a layup for Apprentice to cut into the lead, 23-10, with 9:18 left in the first half.
  • The Sea Gulls responded with a quick 6-1 run capped off by a tough layup from Brandon Craig to go up 29-11 with 6:36 on the clock.
  • A triple from Kaiden Mines gave Salisbury its largest lead of the half, 34-15, with just under four minutes to play in the half.
  • The Builders chipped away at the Sea Gulls lead with an 8-3 run to make it 37-23 with 31 seconds left on the clock.
  • Bloodsworth closed out the scoring in the half with two good free throws to send the teams into halftime with a score of 39-23.
  • Two more free throws from Bloodsworth in the early minutes of the second half gave Salisbury a 20-point lead, 47-27, with 16:28 left to play.
  • Both teams went back-and-forth baskets and possession for the next several minutes, and after a layup from Brendan Davis, Salisbury had a 21-point lead, 61-40, with eight minutes left on the clock.
  • A 13-1 scoring run capped off by a Jordan Oates trey gave the Sea Gulls its largest lead of the day, 74-45, with just over three minutes to play in the game.
  • Both teams added a few more baskets in the closing minutes of the game to give it a final score of 76-52.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Salisbury shot 53.8 percent (28-for-52) from the field, including 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from three-point range.
  • Greg Bloodsworth led the Sea Gulls in scoring with 22 points on 7-for-12 shooting, including 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. He also added four assists and three rebounds to his line.
  • Jordan Oates registered his fifth-straight double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Brandon Craig scored 14 points on a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor.
  • Brendan Davis chipped in 10 points and four assists off the bench.
APPRENTICE SCHOOL NOTES
  • Apprentice shot 34.5 percent (20-for-58) from the field, including 10 percent (2-for-20) from deep.
  • Shawn Eley led the Builders and scored a game-high 24 points on 9-for-17 shooting. He also grabbed eight rebounds.
  • Tony Epps Jr. dished out a game-high five assists.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury returns home and will host Widener on Monday, Jan. 16.
  • Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Maggs PAC.
