Game of runs goes against Men’s Basketball vs. Widener

SALISBURY, Md. – In a game where both teams traded double-digit leads, the Salisbury University men's basketball team couldn't maintain the momentum and fell to the Widener Pride, 76-72, in a back-and-forth battle on Monday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Widener jumped out to an early 7-1 lead after Dominic Dunn hit a three-point jump shot at the 17:38 mark.
  • Salisbury responded with a 7-2 run capped off by a Greg Bloodsworth triple to bring the lead down to one, 9-8, with 14:04 left in the first.
  • A three-point jumper from Steven Matlack gave the Pride a 10-point lead, 23-13, halfway through the first half.
  • A layup by Brandon Craig cut the lead down to one followed by another trey from Bloodsworth capped off a 16-4 run that gave the Sea Gulls the lead, 29-27, with 4:52 left on the first-half clock.
  • Both teams added a few more baskets in the closing minutes of the half and Salisbury went into halftime with a 35-33 lead.
  • Salisbury jumped out to an eight-point lead, 41-33, to start the second half after two good free throws from Jordan Oates and back-to-back layups by Craig with 18:02 left to play.
  • A few minutes later, Brendan Davis knocked down a three-point jumper to give the Sea Gulls their largest lead of the day, 52-41, with 14:28 left in regulation.
  • Down 10 points, 61-51, Widener hit a layup and triple to trim the lead down to five, 61-56, with just over nine minutes left.
  • After more back-and-forth action, a fast-break layup by Myles Bright knotted the game at 66 at the 4:55 mark.
  • Salisbury regained the lead with two good free throws from Oates, but Widener got it right back with a trey by Dunn on the following possession, 69-68, with four minutes left to play.
  • Cameron Heard knocked down a jumper to give the Sea Gulls the lead, 70-69, with 3:33 left.
  • Kevin Schenk scored the next five points for Widener to give the Pride a four-point lead, 74-70, with just 1:33 left on the clock.
  • Kaiden Mines added one more bucket for Salisbury and the team was forced to put Widener at the line. Pat Holden hit both his free throws down the stretch to give the game its final score of 76-72.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Salisbury shot 47.3 percent (26-for-55) from the floor, including 44.4 percent (8-for-18) from three-point range.
  • Brandon Craig recorded his fourth double-double of the season with a game-high 22 points on 9-for-13 shooting and 13 rebounds, including four on the offensive end.
  • Cameron Heard scored 14 points on 6-for-10 shooting, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. He also added four rebounds and two assists to his line.
  • Brendan Davis scored eight points and dished out six assists.
  • Greg Bloodsworth scored nine points and grabbed three rebounds in the first half. Bloodsworth crossed the 1,000-point career mark with a free throw in the first half. Bloodsworth scored 430 points at Wesley College and 575 points in his career so far at SU.
WIDENER GAME NOTES
  • Widener shot 50 percent (30-for-60) from the floor, including 47.1 percent (8-for-17) from three-point range.
  • Dominic Dunn led the Pride with 21 points.
  • Steven Matlack added 14 points and six assists.
  • Pat Holden and Kevin Schenk each scored nine points.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury will host the Hampden-Sydney Tigers on Saturday, Jan. 21.
  • Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Maggs PAC in Salisbury.
