Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball falters at No. 1 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team hung tough through the first quarter until top-ranked Christopher Newport found a new gear, allowing the Captains to race to an 86-38 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Freeman Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After falling behind 11-4 in the game's first four minutes, the Sea Gulls stabilized and kept the Captains off the board for the middle three minutes of the first quarter. Ashlynn Burrows hit a jumper in the midst of the defensive stand that cut the deficit to 11-6.
  • Katy Rader broke CNU's scoreless drought with a three, then Emily Dilger and Nadia Bullock strung together back-to-back jays to get SU within 14-10 at the 2:05 mark. The Captains countered with buckets from Sondra Fan and Hannah Kaloi, but Dilger's two from the paint made it a two-possession game at 18-12 to end the first.
  • CNU kicked it into overdrive at the beginning of the second quarter, using a Rader triple to jumpstart an 8-0 run that made it 26-12 at the 8:47 mark.
  • Bullock stopped the bleeding with a layup, but 12 points is as close as the Sea Gulls would get for the rest of the period. The Captains clocked in 32 points in the second, capped by back-to-back treys from Kaloi and Fan that pushed the CNU lead to 50-25 at the half.
  • Salisbury netted just two points in the third quarter on a Dilger layup with 12 seconds remaining. Alivia Giles answered with a jumper at the buzzer to make it 67-27 Captains.
  • Tori Rumbaugh and Burrows knocked down jays as part of a 4-2 SU spurt to open the fourth quarter, but CNU locked in from there and pushed its lead as high as 48. Last-minute free throws from Hailey Kellogg made the margin 86-38 at the final buzzer.
