Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball stalls out against Mary Washington

SALISBURY, Md. – After keeping pace for the first three quarters, the Salisbury University women's basketball team faded in the fourth in a 57-48 defeat at the hands of the Mary Washington Eagles on Saturday afternoon at Maggs PAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • On a day when the Sea Gulls honored their four graduating seniors, the injured Catherine Gibson was inserted into the starting lineup and made a layup for her final career points. The Eagles then tied the game on an uncontested layup by Ashley Martin.
  • With the game tied 8-8 halfway through the first quarter, the Eagles got five straight on a Martin three and layup from Megan Baxter. SU answered with the next five on triple from Nadia Bullock and Tori Rumbaugh second-chance layup, tying it 13-13 at the 2:35 mark.
  • Down 14-13 inside two minutes to go, Emily Dilger hit a pair of free throws to give the Sea Gulls the lead, then Hailey Ader made it 17-14 on a layup. UMW responded with a jumper by Adeline Riner, then Elizabeth Dufrane beat the buzzer with a running three to make it 19-17 Eagles after one.
  • With UMW up 21-20 at the 4:49 mark of the second quarter, Jordan Carpenter converted a jumper and made one-of-two at the line, then Martin connected from distance to expand the Eagle lead to 26-20.
  • Ashlynn Burrows got the Sea Gulls back on track with two foul shots, then Alex Bull drained a triple to make it a one-point game. Bullock followed with a jay to give Salisbury the lead, then Burrows capped the 9-0 run with a bucket inside a minute to go that made it 29-26. Riner stopped the bleeding for UMW with a jumper, and SU took a 29-28 cushion into halftime.
  • Keagan Schwab and Rumbaugh traded treys to open the third quarter, then after both teams went cold Abby Wilkinson converted a second-chance layup to put the Sea Gulls up 34-31 at the 4:35 mark.
  • Carpenter hit two free throws to spark an 8-0 Eagle run, capping the flourish herself with a three-point play that made it 39-34 with 2:00 to go. After the teams traded foul shots, Bull managed a bucket off a miss to cut it to 41-38 after three.
  • The Eagles brought the defensive hammer in the fourth quarter, holding Salisbury without a field goal for over seven minutes to begin the period. UMW unleashed a 14-1 run over that span, including six points from Carpenter, to make it 55-39.
  • Burrows hit a jumper at the 2:54 mark, setting off a 6-0 run that featured layups from Dilger and Bull to cut the SU hole to 55-45. The rally was too little, too late, though, as Riner's jumper with 1:07 left kept the game from swinging out of the Eagles' hands, and UMW soon after finished off a 57-48 margin of victory.
