Davis nets career-high in battle with Hampden-Sydney

SALISBURY, Md. – A late run pushed the Hampden-Sydney Tigers over the Salisbury University men's basketball team, 77-64, on Saturday at Maggs PAC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Just over a minute into the game, Salisbury jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after Brendan Davis and Kaiden Mines knocked down triples on the Sea Gulls first two possessions.
  • Hampden Sydney settled in and retook the lead, 9-8, after a layup from Davidson Hubbard at the 16:12 mark.
  • Both teams went back-and-forth knocking down shots for the next few minutes, but another trey by Mines gave Salisbury a 20-14 lead with 10:36 left in the first half.
  • The Tigers battled back and tied the game at 23 with another basket from Hubbard with 8:23 left on the clock.
  • The back-and-forth continued for the next several minutes. With a two-point lead, 36-34, Aidan Camper knocked down two free-throws in the final minute of the half to send the Sea Gulls into halftime with a four-point lead, 38-34.
  • Hampden-Sydney opened the second half with a 7-2 run to regain the lead, 41-40, two minutes into the final frame.
  • Down by four points, Jordan Oates made a tough layup to pull Salisbury within two, 52-50, with just under 13 minutes to play.
  • A 7-0 by the Tigers gave them a nine-point lead, 59-50, with 9:22 left on the clock.
  • Back-to-back layups by Davis and Oates cut the lead down to five, 59-54, but Hampden Sydney's offense answered again with a 10-2 run to go up 69-56 with five minutes to go.
  • Both teams added a few more baskets in the closing minutes of the match to give the game its final score of 77-64.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Salisbury shot 43.1 percent (25-for-58) from the field, including 42.3 percent (11-for-26) from three-point range.
  • Jordan Oates led the Sea Gulls in scoring with 17 points on 7-for-14 shooting. He also hauled in five rebounds and blocked two shots.
  • Brendan Davis scored a career-high 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting, including 3-for-6 from behind the arc. Davis also dished out a game-high six assists and grabbed five rebounds.
  • Brandon Craig scored eight points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out four assists.
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY GAME NOTES
  • Hampden-Sydney shot 51.8 percent (29-for-56) from the field, including 40 percent (6-for-15) from three-point range.
  • Davidson Hubbard registered a double-double with a game-high 30 points on 13-for-16 shooting and 14 rebounds.
  • Ryan Clements scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury continues its homestand on Wednesday, Jan. 25 against the Marymount Saints.
  • Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Maggs PAC in Salisbury.
