Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer extends winning streak, blank No. 17 W&L 1-0

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team had a monumental night as Abby Mattia scored her first career goal courtesy of a Kristen Ging assist to lead the Sea Gulls over the 17th-ranked Washington & Lee Generals for the first time in program history. Both teams concluded an eventful evening by coming together at the Gerry DiBartolo Sea Gull Soccer Complex in honor of the Sea Gulls' pink game supporting pediatric cancer awareness.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started with both teams working to get their game plans established. In the fourth minute, W&L's Amelia Manke took the first shot of the contest, forcing Riley Pinato to make a save as the shot was destined for the left side of the goal.
  • The Sea Gulls took their first shot of the contest in the 24th minute when Rebecca Fairbanks took an attempt from outside the box, forcing Sydney Smith to make the grab.
  • The first half seemed destined to finish scoreless but then in the 41st minute Kristen Ging dribbled into the middle of the Generals' defense before dumping the ball off to Abby Mattia, who cut to her right before launching a strike that got by a diving Smith to give the Sea Gulls a 1-0 lead.
  • The second half witnessed constant action from the Generals as they consistently substituted players on and off, trying to keep fresh legs on the field. They additionally laid siege to the Sea Gulls, taking 11 shots and seven corner kicks in the second half alone, but Pinato and the Salisbury defense stood strong and held a clean sheet against the Generals.
