Rail tops 1,000 career digs in Volleyball’s sweep of CNU, Warren Wilson

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Six sets were sufficient for the Salisbury University volleyball team in Saturday's matches against Christopher Newport and Warren Wilson at the Freeman Center. The Sea Gulls swept both Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) opponents, beating the host Captains 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-16) and the Owls 3-0 (25-6, 25-21, 25-13).

HOW IT HAPPENED vs. CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT
  • The Sea Gulls got out to a fast start, using a pair of kills from Gwen Eustace as well as strikes from Jackie Mitchell and Natalie Uibel to go ahead 10-4 in the opening set. The teams jockeyed for position throughout much of the set before the hosts brought the margin within one, 18-17.
  • Salisbury answered the call, taking four of the next five to grow the lead, 22-18. A late put away from Julie Altieri helped the maroon and gold secure the first set, 25-21.
  • The maroon and gold claimed five of the first seven in the second set, but the Captains narrowed the score to 10-9 through the first 19 points. Emma Quandt powered a four-point swing with a pair of kills, but CNU took four of the following five to bring the score to 15-13.
  • SU snatched five of the next six to grow the margin to six before a Captains run closed the gap to three, 21-18. The Sea Gulls slammed the door, taking three in a row before Eustace launched a service ace to secure the set, 25-18.
  • Significant swings were the story of the third set. Holding an 8-6 lead through 14 points, Salisbury nabbed five straight to grow the margin to 13-6. CNU embarked on a five-point swing of their own to narrow the margin to 13-11.
  • The visitors ended their first match of the afternoon in style, taking four straight and six of the next eight points before ending the match on a 6-3 run. A ball-handling error against the hosts handed SU its first match victory of the day, with a third set score of 25-16.
