Wheeler’s strike lifts Women’s Soccer to third straight victory

FREDERICK, Md. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team nabbed its third consecutive victory on Wednesday evening, using Ava Wheeler's third career goal to collect a 1-0 win over the Hood College Blazers at Thomas Athletic Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The defensive units answered the call in the first half, with Ashley Pantano and Kristen Ging contributing the only two shots of the opening period and the teams stayed knotted in a scoreless tie.
  • Exiting the intermission, Salisbury turned up the heat on the Blazers. The Sea Gulls rattled off a pair of shots in the first seven minutes out of halftime before Ava Wheeler laced a low shot into the bottom left in the 53rd minute for the go-ahead goal to make it 1-0.
  • The Sea Gulls kept the pressure on, outshooting Hood 8-1 after Wheeler's finish and 13-1 on the night while earning their fifth clean sheet of the season.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Ava Wheeler netted her third career goal in the win while putting both of her shots on target. Wheeler has put eight of her 13 shots on goal this season, good for a .615 shots-on-goal percentage.
  • Ashley Pantano and Zakiyyah McMillan each added three shots in the shutout. Kristen Ging tallied a pair of shots, both of which were on goal. SU outshot Hood 13-1 for the game.
  • Hayle Foreman improved her record to 3-1 on the season, going the full 90 minutes and making one save.
  • Autumn Conway was tagged with a yellow card in the 28th minute, while Jordan Edwards was issued a caution in the 85th.
HOOD GAME NOTES
  • Priya Nair registered the lone shot for the Blazers.
  • Gabi Dolan went the distance in goal and made six saves.
  • The Blazers received a team yellow card in the 68th minute.
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls have a quick turnaround, traveling to face Farmingdale State on Saturday.
  • Kickoff from Farmingdale, N.Y. is slated for 2 p.m.
