No. 6 Field Hockey buries UMW, 6-1, advances to C2C title game

SALISBURY, Md. – The sixth-ranked and second-seeded Salisbury University field hockey team took care of business against the third-seeded Mary Washington Eagles, winning 6-1 in the semifinal round of the 2023 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Tournament on Wednesday evening at Sea Gull Stadium.

Salisbury now advances to the C2C Championship on Saturday at third-ranked and top-seeded Christopher Newport.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sea Gulls struck the opening blow in the seventh minute as Madelyn Reed set up a penalty corner and eventually pushed it into the cage to put SU up 1-0.
  • Not even two minutes later, Isabel Larrabee served a long pass into the arc that Arden Hunteman corralled. Hunteman then made a move to her left and flicked it past the keeper to double the Sea Gull lead at 2-0.
  • Salisbury made it three goals in the first quarter as Mack Dinopoulos fired a rocket toward the cage that Reed deflected in, giving SU a commanding 3-0 lead after the first 15 minutes.
  • In the 20th minute, Molly Reardon snaked into the arc from the right side and found Marli McDorman in front of the keeper. McDorman then flicked it left to Hunteman, who deposited her second goal to make it 4-0.
  • The Eagles broke up the shutout in the 23rd minute as Grayson Scott took a feed on a penalty corner and sniped one into the lower left corner of the cage, bringing UMW within 4-1.
  • After a scoreless third quarter, Salisbury salted it away with two quick goals in the fourth. Dinopoulos set up McDorman for a strike in the 48th minute to push the lead to 5-1.
  • In the 50th minute it was McDorman who worked her way around three Eagle defenders for a backhander into the left corner, giving the game its final 6-1 margin.
