No. 6 Field Hockey’s run ends against No. 4 JHU in NCAA quarterfinals

BALTIMORE, Md. – For the second straight year, the sixth-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team saw its tournament run derailed in the national quarterfinals, falling 1-0 to the fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays in the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Homewood Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams spent the first quarter locked in a defensive struggle, with one wide Blue Jay shot accounting for the only attempt of the period.
  • The Sea Gulls put two of their four shots in the second quarter on the cage, with Marli McDorman and Madelyn Reed forcing JHU goalie Alexis Loder to make two saves to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
  • In the third quarter, the Blue Jays earned a penalty corner in the 39th minute. Siena Urbanski inserted it left of the arc to Liz Falterer, and Falterer passed it to Mikayla Schoff right of center. Schoff unleashed a powerful slapshot that rolled into the low right corner of the cage, giving JHU the 1-0 advantage.
  • McKenna Horner put a shot on goal early in the fourth quarter that Loder brushed away, and SU wouldn't get another attempt on goal until the dying moments of the game.
  • With 12 seconds left the Sea Gulls drew a penalty corner. McDorman took one last shot from the top of the arc toward the left of the cage, but Loder brushed it out of danger to send the hosts through to the national semifinals.
