Men’s Basketball stumbles against Widener, 71-49

CHESTER, Pa. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team dropped its weekend showdown against the Widener University Pride by a 71-49 final at the Schwartz Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Widener led wire-to-wire, beginning the contest with an 11-0 run that helped the Pride hold the advantage for the game's duration.
  • Salisbury responded with a swing of their own as Jordan Oates cashed in a three-pointer to cap a 9-5 run that tightened the gap, 16-9.
  • The hosts enacted a 10-2 run over the next four minutes, increasing their lead to 26-11. A five-point flurry from Kaiden Mines powered a 9-2 response over the next two minutes to bring the deficit back to single-digits, 28-20.
  • SU narrowly outscored the Pride 10-8 over the final 8:19 of the opening period, bringing the score to 36-30 at the intermission.
  • Widener opened the second half in a similar fashion to the first, using an 11-2 run to extend their lead to 47-32. After consecutive baskets from Brendan Davis and Aidan Camper, the Pride scored nine straight to grow their largest lead of the contest, 56-36.
  • Six different Sea Gulls scored in the final nine minutes, but Salisbury could not gain ground down the stretch in the 71-49 defeat.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Brendan Davis finished with 10 points, three rebounds, and two assists.
  • Kaiden Mines also tallied 10 points for the Sea Gulls.
  • Reed Rebstock hauled in a team-high nine rebounds.
  • The Sea Gulls shot 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the floor, 11.1 percent (2-of-18) from three-point range, and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the free-throw line.
WIDENER GAME NOTES
  • Steven Matlack tallied a game-high 13 points.
  • Dominic Dunn finished with eight rebounds and five assists.
  • Kevin Schenk shared the team lead with eight boards while adding six points and a pair of assists.
  • Anthony DiCaro tallied seven points, six rebounds, and five assists.
  • The Pride shot 49.2 percent (29-of-59) from the field, 40 percent (10-of-25) from beyond the arc, and 3-of-3 from the stripe.
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls conclude the road stint on Wednesday, Nov. 29 when they face the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins in Gwynedd Valley, Pa.
  • Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. from the Griffin Complex.
