WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Salisbury University volleyball team finalized its regular season in emphatic fashion, sweeping the final tri-match of the campaign with a 3-2 (31-33, 25-17, 18-25, 25-21, 15-13) defeat of the hosting Catholic Cardinals and a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 30-28) victory over the Ferrum Panthers on Saturday afternoon at Franny Murray Court.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. CATHOLIC
- The day's first match had drama from the start, with the sides cramming 64 total points in the opening set. Catholic opened with an 11-6 advantage, but the Sea Gulls swung back, scoring seven out of 10 to bring the set within one, 14-13.
- Catholic extended its lead to as much as four, but Salisbury rallied down the stretch to bring the match within two, 22-20. A pair of critical points put the hosts one point from a win in the opening set, 24-21, before the Sea Gulls used a pair of kills from Jackie Mitchell and a putaway by Kiley McTaggart to take a 25-24 lead.
- The foes jostled in the late stages, with each side one point away from taking the set on multiple occasions. In the end, the Cardinals followed a kill with a service ace to clinch the frame, 33-31.
- Salisbury responded in set two, sprinting to a 14-6 head start punctuated by three straight kills by Mitchell. The Cardinals took three of the following four before Bella Rubino stepped in, swatting a pair of kills to keep the margin at seven, 17-10.
- The Sea Gulls kept Catholic at arms-length the rest of the way, never letting the hosts within five points in the eventual 25-17 set victory. Julie Altieri scored the 24th point before an attack error on the Cardinals sealed the frame.
- Catholic commenced the third frame with a 10-5 lead. Salisbury swiped five of the next seven to tighten the gap to two, but the Cardinals rallied with five consecutive points and nine of the next 11 to set the score at 21-12.
- Kills from Rubino, Gwen Eustace, and Emma Quandt headlined the Sea Gull comeback effort, but the hosts answered a three-point swing with a put away to secure the 25-18 win in the third set.
- Mitchell featured for Salisbury to begin the fourth set, collecting a trio of kills and helping the Sea Gulls build a 13-7 start. The Cardinals clawed their way back into the contest, eventually bringing the match to within one at 19-18.
- Salisbury used kills from Altieri and Mitchell to lay a three-point cushion, but the Cardinals claimed three of their own to tie the set at 21. Gwen Eustace caught fire in the final points, claiming kills in three of the final four points to secure the set, 25-21.
- The squads split the first 20 points of the fifth set, 10-10. Catholic took a slim 13-12 advantage but kills from Eustace and McTaggart helped Salisbury find a 15-13 win to secure the match victory.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
- Jackie Mitchell secured her seventh double-double of the year with 17 kills and 21 digs.
- Gwen Eustace punched 16 kills at a .406 clip and leapt for a team-high six blocks.
- Kiley McTaggart tallied 11 kills and four blocks. Emma Quandt also finished with 11 kills while adding three blocks.
- Julie Altieri had a match to remember, dishing out a career-high 51 assists while adding 10 kills and 11 digs to complete the triple-double.
- Grace Rail added 27 digs and five assists in the victory.
- Salisbury swung a solid .267 in the match, highlighted by a crisp .429 percentage in the second set.
- The Sea Gulls improved to 5-0 in five-set matches this season.
CATHOLIC GAME NOTES
- Olivia Blondin finished with a game-high 21 kills and added 17 digs.
- Sydney Sheppard compiled 47 assists and 13 digs.
- Gaby Hernandez-Ferraiuoli tallied 29 digs in the match.
- Catholic stacked 57 kills against 22 errors, swinging .178 in the match.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. FERRUM
- The sides were relentless in the opening set, splitting the first 20 points even at 10-10. Twelve points later, the teams again landed in a tie, 16-16.
- Salisbury swiped six of the next seven points to lead 22-17, but the Panthers pounced with three in a row to close the gap to two. It was a Sea Gull block party to close the frame, with Gwen Eustace, Kiley McTaggart, and Natalie Uibel each recording a block in the final three points to seal a 25-20 set win.
- The maroon and gold controlled the second frame from start to finish, jumping out to a 17-9 lead and never letting the Panthers within eight the rest of the way to win the second set, 25-14.
- Jackie Mitchell and Emma Quandt each punched a pair of kills to help the Sea Gulls establish a 16-12 advantage in the final frame. Ferrum responded by taking seven of the next nine points and the lead, 19-18.
- The Panthers won five of the following seven to position themselves one point from a set victory, but the Sea Gulls collected fourth straight to force extra volleyball for the second time in the day's tri-match.
- Uibel was the hero in the added points, punching down three kills in the final eight rallies to help the Sea Gulls lock down a 30-28 win in set three and a sweep of the Panthers.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
- Emma Quandt finished with 10 kills and three blocks, swinging .375 in the match.
- Gwen Eustace was wildly efficient, punching .500 with nine kills while adding four blocks and four digs.
- Jackie Mitchell punched nine kills while adding 13 digs.
- Julie Altieri served up 29 assists with six digs in the sweep.
- Grace Rail led the SU backline with 19 digs.
- Salisbury hit .212 as a team with 34 kills against 13 errors.
- The Sea Gulls swung .226 for the match, including an impressive .366 percentage in the second set.
FERRUM GAME NOTES
- Shelby Waltrip led the Panthers with 12 kills.
- Kenzee Chaffin dished out 19 assists.
- Sami Kircher chased down 26 digs.
- The Panthers stacked 34 kills against 17 errors in the match.
