Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late surge not enough for Men’s Basketball at No. 6 Hampden-Sydney

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team provided a late scare, but ultimately dropped Saturday's showdown against the sixth-ranked Hampden-Sydney College Tigers by a 64-58 final on Saturday afternoon at Kirby Field House.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jordan Oates found the basket 25 seconds into the contest to hand Salisbury the first points of the day. After a 5-0 run, Oates struck again with a bucket from range to tie the contest at 5-5.
  • The hosts controlled the next six minutes of action, outscoring the Sea Gulls 18-2 in that span to lead 23-7 at the midway point of the period.
  • Oates enlisted the help of Reed Rebstock to tighten the contest, with the pair combining to outpace the Tigers 11-3 over the next four minutes. With three and a half minutes left in the half, Salisbury trailed 26-18.
  • Hampden-Sydney closed the period on a 5-0 swing, setting the halftime score at 31-18.
  • Each side tallied 14 points across the opening minutes of the second half, giving the Tigers a 45-32 advantage with 10:45 to play. Brendan Davis and Buddah Spencer each dropped in five points to lead a 10-4 run over the next four minutes, bringing SU within seven at 49-42.
  • Each side added a pair of scores over the next 60 seconds before a 5-0 run helped the hosts add to the cushion, 58-47. Rebstock nailed a pair of desperation heaves from beyond the arc inside the final minute to bring SU within four points, but late free throws sealed the deal for the sixth-ranked Tigers, 64-58.
