Women's Basketball takes down Gallaudet, 66-57

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team used a strong second half to defeat the Gallaudet University Bison, 66-57, on Wednesday evening at Maggs Physical Activities Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kayla Nieberlein opened up the scoring for the contest as her back-to-back buckets gave Salisbury an early lead in what would ultimately be a tight first quarter. The largest lead by either team was four points during the period.
  • Gallaudet took the lead in the opening minutes of the second quarter after Cassidy Perry made a free throw and a jumper. The Sea Gulls retook the lead as Tori Rumbaugh, Sym Deloatch, and Abby Plaugher scored to give Salisbury a five-point lead.
  • The Bison would battle their way back to be within one of the Sea Gulls to close out the first half.
  • Coming out of the halftime break, the Bison took their first lead since the early goings of the second quarter. Perry scored the go-ahead basket before Rajeena Guettler gave Gallaudet a three-point lead.
  • Salisbury would then go on a 12 to two run to retake the lead. Cora Shafer started the run with a layup in the paint. Rumbaugh and Nieberlein would add to the run before Shafer would knock down two free throws. Nicole Miller added two baskets of her own to give the Sea Gulls a seven-point lead.
  • In the fourth quarter Gallaudet clawed their way back, tying the contest at 49 with less than five minutes left in the contest. After trading baskets Salisbury built up an eight-point lead, capped by a three-pointer by Alex Bull.
  • The Bison attempted to draw even, but free throws by Rumbaugh and Bull sealed the victory for the Sea Gulls in the final minute.
 
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Nicole Miller had a team-high 15 points, shooting 7-of-14 from the floor, while also grabbing five rebounds.
  • Kayla Nieberlein knocked down 6-of-13 from the floor for 12 points and added two assists as well as four rebounds.
  • Cora Shafer grabbed a team-high nine rebounds during the contest. She added six points, going 2-of-5 from the field and a perfect 2-of-2 at the charity stripe.
  • The Sea Gulls shot 26-of-66 overall on the night, 4-of-20 beyond the arc, and a near-perfect 10-of-11 at the free throw line.
 
GALLAUDET GAME NOTES
  • Cassidy Perry scored a game-high 23 points on 11-of-16 shooting and added 12 rebounds and three assists.
  • Rajeena Guettler added 12 points, eight rebounds, and an assist for the Bison.
  • Cam Lexow scored 12 points, going 5-of-12 from the floor and 2-of-3 behind the three-point line. She added four assists and a rebound to her totals.
  • The Bison shot 26-of-66 overall, 2-of-3 from three, and 3-of-4 at the charity stripe.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls hit the road this weekend as they head to Marymount on Saturday, Dec. 9.
  • Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Converse Family Fieldhouse in Arlington, Va.
