Brown, Dowd lead No. 2 Men’s Lacrosse past No. 19 Roanoke, 18-10

SALISBURY, Md.  – Strong offense from Jude Brown and Jack Dowd propelled the second-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team to an 18-10 win over the 19th-ranked Roanoke Maroons in the 2023 home opener on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Maroons opened the scoring with a quick goal from Luke Kammerman after a Sea Gull turnover in the first seven seconds of the game.
  • The Sea Gulls quickly answered with a goal on their next possession by Cross Ferrara to tie the game at one.
  • Roanoke followed Ferrara's goal with a 3-1 run in the middle goings of the first quarter. The run was capped by a goal by Jack Kennedy that gave Roanoke a 4-2 lead.
  • Salisbury responded with a 3-1 scoring run of its own to close out the first quarter and tie the game at five. Jack Dowd, Jude Brown and Ferrara all scored during the run.
  • The SU offense came alive in the second quarter with five straight goals to take a 10-5 lead with just under five minutes left in the first half. Dowd took over the game during the run with three of Salisbury's five goals.
  • After a Roanoke goal, Salisbury scored back-to-back goals from Ferrara and Brown just under 40 seconds apart from each other to take a 12-6 lead into the halftime break.
  • The Sea Gulls opened the second half with more scoring, highlighted by a behind-the-back goal from Brown and an Isaac Thrasher goal to push the Sea Gulls lead to eight, 14-6, five minutes into the third quarter.
  • Wyatt Whitlow and Noah Goad tallied goals for Roanoke with a Dowd goal sandwiched in between for SU that made the score 15-8 at the end of the third quarter.
  • The Sea Gulls put the stamp on their win with a man-up goal from Brice Bromwell and the final goal from Joe Carozza in the final three minutes of the game.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Jack Dowd and Jude Brown led the Sea Gulls with nine points. Dowd notched career-highs in points and goals with nine points on six goals and three assists. Brown recorded five assists and four goals.
  • Cross Ferrara added seven points on four goals and three assists.
  • Isaac Thrasher and Luke Nestor each scored two points. Thrasher scored two goals and Nestor dished out two assists.
  • The Sea Gulls finished 23-of-32 in faceoffs. Ham McPartland went 16-for-22 in faceoffs and scooped up a game-high 12 ground balls. Mackenzie Moreland added in five faceoff wins with four ground balls.
  • Zach Timmons led the defense with two caused turnovers and five ground balls.
  • Isaac Thrasher and Luke Nestor each scooped up four ground balls. John DeFazio added in three ground balls.
  • Z.J. Shahin earned the win in net with six saves.
ROANOKE GAME NOTES
  • Noah Goad led the Maroon with a hat trick.
  • Luke Kammerman added two goals.
  • The Cardinals went 8-of-31 in faceoffs. Carson Peck finished 6-of-20 in faceoffs with three ground balls
  • RT Williamson led the Maroons defense with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
  • Taylor Lewis started in net for the Maroons and recorded 17 saves.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury will return to Sea Gull Stadium next week for a matchup against the Scranton Royals on Saturday, Feb. 18.
  • Opening faceoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
