Berkman earns win No. 600 as No. 2 Men’s Lacrosse downs Scranton, 25-10

SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury University men's lacrosse head coach Jim Berkman picked up career win 600 as the second-ranked Sea Gulls rolled over the Scranton Royals, 25-10, on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Scranton had a fast start to the game. Christopher Crapanzano won the opening faceoff of the game and netted the first goal of the contest nine seconds into the game.
  • Brice Bromwell responded with Salisbury's first goal of the game less than a minute later.
  • Bromwell's goal sparked a four-goal run in the middle goings of the first quarter with tallies by Jude Brown, Joe Carozza and Jack Dowd to extend Salisbury's lead to 4-1 with just over six minutes left.
 
  • The two teams traded goals to close out the first quarter to push SU's lead to 6-3.
  • Salisbury's offense exploded in the second quarter with a 9-0 scoring run with seven different goal scorers to take a commanding 15-3 lead over Scranton. A man-up goal by Isaac Thrasher, a long-stick goal by John DeFazio and a pair of goals by Dowd and Bromwell highlighted the run for the Sea Gulls.
  • Back-to-back goals by Crapanzano to start the second half cut into the Salisbury lead but Cross Ferrara took over in the third quarter. Ferrara netted four goals in the third and assisted on Brown's tally at the end of the quarter to push Salisbury's lead to 22-8.
  • Goals by Joey Halloran, Robby Donnelly and Josh Sanchez closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter for the Sea Gulls as the team pushed its season-opening win streak to three games.
  SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Head coach Jim Berkman earned his 600th career win with the victory over Scranton. Berkman has won 591 games with SU and nine with SUNY-Potsdam.
  • Cross Ferrara registered six goals, four of which came in the third quarter, and two assists to pace the SU offense. He also added a pair of ground balls.
  • Jack Dowd netted four goals and dished out a pair of assists.
  • Brice Bromwell put away three goals while Isaac Thrasher and Jude Brown each had a pair of goals.
  • John DeFazio led the SU defense with two caused turnovers. DeFazio scored his first goal in nearly two years in the second quarter.
  • As a team, Salisbury won 27-of-39 faceoffs with Ham McPartland and Blake Malamphy splitting time. McPartland went 13-for-20 while Malamphy earned 14 faceoff wins on 18 tries.
  • Z.J. Shahin stopped seven shots to collect the win.
SCRANTON GAME NOTES
  • Christopher Crapanzano scored a team-high five goals along with 11 faceoff wins and 10 ground balls.
  • Mitchell Kozak had three goals.
  • Declan Allen tallied 12 saves in relief of Evan Rosa in goal.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury hits the road for the next two Saturdays. The Sea Gulls head north to Pennsylvania to take on the eighth-ranked Gettysburg Bullets on Saturday, Feb. 25.
  • Opening faceoff in Gettysburg, Pa. is set for 1 p.m.
