Ferrara’s 300th, strong defense carries No. 5 Men’s Lacrosse past USMMA, 13-1

SALISBURY, Md.  – Salisbury University graduate attacker Cross Ferrara eclipsed the 300-career goal mark as the Sea Gulls locked down the U.S. Merchant Marine Mariners, 13-1, on Tuesday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It didn't take long for Cross Ferrara to make history as Ferrara scored on a turnaround shot in the first minute of the game.
  • The Mariners answered the early Sea Gull goal with a goal from Owen Barcus to tie the game at one at the 8:35 mark of the first.
  • The Sea Gulls regained control with a three-goal run to end the first quarter with a 4-1 lead. The run began with a Jude Brown goal at the five-minute mark followed by tallies by Ferrara and Luke Nestor 30 seconds apart.
  • The Sea Gulls opened the second quarter with the second goal of the day from Nestor to give Salisbury a 5-1 lead.
  • Both defenses played stout throughout the second quarter. Jack Dowd broke the scoreless run for both teams with a goal in the final minute of the second to give the Sea Gulls a 6-1 lead at the half.
  • The Sea Gulls dominated the third quarter with a 4-0 run led by two goals from Ferrara.
  • The Sea Gulls continued the run into the fourth quarter with three more goals capped off by back-to-back Josh Rotman goals to give the Sea Gulls the 13-1 win.

  • Owen Barcus led the Mariners with a goal.
  • Jack Collins tallied an assist.
  • The Mariners went 6-of-18 in faceoffs. Chris Neuman went 6-of-15 in faceoffs with two ground balls
  • Mark Bredeck led the Mariner defense with three caused turnovers and scooped up two ground balls.
  • Samuel Stephenson started in net for the Mariners and recorded 14 saves. Tucker Swinerton finished the game in net and recorded a save.
 
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury will complete its three-game homestand against the fourteenth-ranked SUNY Cortland Red Dragons on Saturday, March 18.  
  • Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. with coverage on the Sea Gull Sports Network (SGSN) beginning at 12:45 p.m.
