Ferrara reaches 400th point as No. 4 Men’s Lacrosse rolls past Stevenson, 15-6

OWINGS MILLS, Md.  – Salisbury University graduate attacker Cross Ferrara became the second player in SU men's lacrosse history to reach 400 career points as the fourth-ranked Sea Gulls defeated the Stevenson Mustangs, 15-6, under the lights on Saturday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a slow start, the Sea Gull offense got rolling with a three-goal run that started with eight minutes remaining in the first quarter with a Joe Carozza goal from Jude Brown that gave Salisbury an early lead.
  • The Mustangs answered the Sea Gulls' three-goal run with a goal from Cam Leydig with three minutes remaining in the first quarter to pull Stevenson within two, 3-1, after the first quarter.
  • SU controlled the majority of the second quarter with a four-goal run that started with a Josh Sanchez goal and ended with a Cross Ferrara goal to give Salisbury a 7-1 lead with 4:26 remaining in the first half.
  • A goal from Mitchell Lachman reduced the Salisbury lead to five, 7-2, at halftime.
  • The Mustangs cut into the Sea Gull lead to four, 7-3, when Leydig scored five minutes into the second half.
  • After some tight defense from both sides, the Sea Gulls broke the five-minute scoreless stretch when Luke Nestor netted his third goal to push the lead back to five, 8-3.
  • After another Mustang goal, the Sea Gulls added two more goals from Charlie White and Carozza both by Ferrara to give Salisbury a 10-4 lead heading into the final quarter.
  • The Sea Gulls opened the fourth with a quick 3-0 run that was sparked by a John DeFazio goal and two more Carozza goals.
  • The Mustangs would add a goal to reduce the deficit to eight, but the Sea Gulls would add another goal from Brown by DeFazio that pushed the lead back to nine.
  • The Mustangs scored the final tally with six minutes remaining in the fourth to make the final score 15-6.
 
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Cross Ferrara led the Sea Gull offense with five points on a goal and an assist. Ferrara's fourth assist of the night was his 400th career point. Ferrara joined Jason Coffman as the second Sea Gull to reach 400 career points. He is also just the 10th player in NCAA men's lacrosse history to eclipse 400 points.
  • Joe Carozza and Jude Brown each finished with four points. Carozza matched his career-high with four goals while Brown scored two goals and dished out two assists.
  • Luke Nestor added in a hat trick, which was his fourth consecutive multi-goal game.
  • The Sea Gulls finished 6-of-24 in faceoffs. Mackenzie Moreland finished the game 4-of-12 at the X with three ground balls. Blake Malamphy added in two faceoff wins with three ground balls.
  • John DeFazio led the Sea Gull defense with three caused turnovers and scooped up a team-high five ground balls.
  • Zach Timmons added in two caused turnovers with four ground balls.
  • Nicholas Ransom earned the win in net and recorded a career-high 16 saves.  
 
STEVENSON GAME NOTES
  • Cam Leydig led the Mustangs offense with a hat trick.
  • Mitchell Lachman tallied a goal and an assist.
  • Stevenson went 18-of-24 in faceoffs. Justin Bordner finished the game 18-of-24 in faceoffs with a game-high 14 ground balls.
  • Ryan Quinn led the Mustang defense with four caused turnovers and four ground balls.
  • Justin Scorese started the game in net for the Mustangs and recorded 15 saves.
 
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury continues on the road on Saturday, April 1 with a Coastal Lacrosse Conference matchup with the Stockton Ospreys.
  • Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
