Second-half surge powers No. 4 Men’s Lacrosse past Stockton, 17-12

GALLOWAY, N.J.  – A pair of four-goal runs in the second half propelled the fourth-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team to a 17-12 win on Saturday against the upset-minded Stockton Ospreys in Coastal Lacrosse Conference (CLC) action.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Ospreys opened the game strong with a goal by Reegan Capozzoli in the first two minutes of the contest.
  • Back-to-back goals by Cross Ferrara gave the Sea Gulls a 2-1 lead at the 10-minute mark of the first quarter.
  • After an Osprey goal tied the game at two, the Sea Gull offense went back to work with a Joe Carozza goal to regain the lead, 3-2. However, a Luc Swedlund goal knotted the game at three at the first-quarter break.
  • The Sea Gulls' offense exploded to start the second quarter with a 4-0 run. Brown started the run with a goal followed by three straight Ferrara goals pushing the Sea Gulls lead to 7-3 with 10 minutes to go in the first half.
  • Stockton responded with a four-goal run of its own in the middle part of the second quarter. The run was capped off by a Noam Levy-Smith goal that tied the game at seven with two minutes to go in the quarter.
  • Luke Nestor put away a goal with a minute left in the first half that gave the Sea Gulls the 8-7 lead at the break.
  • The Ospreys opened the second half with a quick two-goal run that was finished off by a Brendan McHale goal that gave Stockton the 9-8 lead in the early part of the third quarter.
  • The Osprey lead would only last a minute as Nestor scored his second goal of the game to tie the game at nine with 10:19 remaining in the third.
  • After a Stockton goal, the Salisbury offense went on a four-goal run to take the lead for good. The run began with a Jack Dowd tally followed by Nestor's hat-trick goal that gave the maroon and gold the 13-10 lead heading into the fourth.
  • A Swedlund goal cut into the SU lead, 13-11, but the Sea Gulls responded with another 4-0 run to close out the game.
  • The Ospreys added one more goal from Dante Poli from Robbie O'Brien to make the final score 17-12.
 
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Cross Ferrara matched his season-high goal and point total with nine points on seven goals and two assists.
  • Luke Nestor finished with four points on a hat trick and an assist.
  • Brice Bromwell added in a hat trick.
  • The Sea Gulls finished 11-of-33 in faceoffs. Blake Malamphy finished the game 7-of-15 at the X with five ground balls. Mackenzie Moreland added in four faceoff wins with four ground balls.
  • Zach Timmons led the Sea Gull defense with five caused turnovers and three ground balls.
  • John DeFazio added in three caused turnovers and scooped up five ground balls.
  • Nicholas Ransom earned the win in net and recorded 12 saves.  
 
STOCKTON GAME NOTES
  • Reegan Capozzoli and Luc Swedlund each scored a hat trick.
  • Robbie O'Brien scored a goal and added two assists.
  • Stockton went 22-of-33 in faceoffs. Tyler Horvath took every faceoff for the Ospreys and added in a game-high 17 ground balls.  
  • Brenden McSorley led the Osprey defense with two caused turnovers and two ground balls.
  • Colin Berstein started the game in net for the Ospreys and recorded 13 saves.
 
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury returns to Sea Gull Stadium to take on CLC rival and top-ranked Christopher Newport on Saturday, April 8 for the 11th annual Lax for Leukemia game.
  • Opening faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
