No. 4 Men’s Lacrosse stands tall against top-ranked CNU, 16-8

SALISBURY, Md.  – The fourth-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse used a dominating first quarter and a stellar performance from Blake Malamphy and the rest of the defense to upset its Coastal Lacrosse Conference (CLC) rival, No. 1 CNU, 16-8, on Saturday. The win moves the Sea Gulls to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in CLC play.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Salisbury won the opening faceoff and 50 seconds later got on the board. Jack Dowd ripped a shot past Zac Hanway for the first goal of the contest.
  • Just over 30 seconds later, Dowd doubled Salisbury's lead with a feed from Cross Ferrara and bounced through the legs of Hanway.
  • Back-to-back goals by Isaac Thrasher gave Salisbury a 4-0 lead at the nine-minute mark of the first quarter to force a CNU timeout.
  • The Captains answered back following the timeout with a goal from Alex Brendes to reduce the deficit to three, 4-1.
  • The Sea Gulls responded quickly with a goal from Thrasher just 30 seconds later to push the Salisbury lead back to four.
  • After a Captains goal by Andrew Cook, the Sea Gulls went back to work on offense with a goal from Brice Bromwell that gave Salisbury a 6-2 lead after the first quarter.
  • The defense stepped up for the Sea Gulls in the second quarter and didn't allow a Captain goal. Ferrara notched a pair of goals in the second to extend the SU lead to 8-2 at the half.
  • The Sea Gulls offense continued to control the game in third with a five-goal run that started with a goal from Bromwell and ended with a Josh Sanchez goal to push the Sea Gulls lead to 11, 13-2, with four minutes left in the third.
  • The Captains offense kicked it into gear with a three-goal run that started in the third with a goal from Brendes and an Aidan Wheeler goal with 11:09 remaining in the game.
  • Thrasher sandwiched a CNU goal by Danny McMinn to extend the lead to 15-6 with six minutes left in the game.
  • CNU added a goal from Brett Jackson, but with CNU doing a 10-man ride in the closing stages of the game, Jackson Woodward sent a shot into an open Captain net to finish the scoring for the Sea Gulls.
  • A late goal from Danny McMinn to put the final score at 16-8.
 
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Isaac Thrasher led the Sea Gulls offense with a career-high six goals. He bested his previous mark of five set three times last season. Thrasher collected three goals in the opening frame of the game.  
  • Cross Ferrara added five points on two goals and three assists.
  • Jude Brown dished out four assists.
  • Jack Dowd and Brice Bromwell finished with three points each. Dowd scored two goals with an assist while Bromwell scored a hat trick.
  • The Sea Gulls finished 18-of-28 in faceoffs. Blake Malamphy dominated at the faceoff X and finished the day 18-of-25 with a career-high 12 ground balls.  
  • John DeFazio caused a game-high four turnovers and reeled in eight ground balls.
  • Zach Timmons caused two CNU errors and added six ground balls.
  • Nicholas Ransom earned the win in net and recorded six saves.  
 
CNU GAME NOTES
  • Danny McMinn led the CNU offense with two goals and an assist.
  • Alex Brendes added in two goals.
  • CNU went 10-of-28 in faceoffs. Cole Evans finished 9-of-17 at the X with a team-high seven ground balls. Warner Cabaniss was limited to a 1-for-11 day at faceoff.  
  • Zac Hanway recorded eight saves for Captains.
 
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury travels to Chestertown, Md. for the annual "War on the Shore" game against the Washington Shoremen on Saturday, April 15.  
  • Opening faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
