SALISBURY, Md. – A five-goal first-quarter run and stout defense helped the second-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team prevail over a high-powered No. 7 Amherst Mammoth offense, 14-10, in the NCAA Third Round on Sunday.
Salisbury improves its record to 20-1 in 2023 and advances to its 32nd consecutive NCAA Quarterfinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a feeling-out process by both teams, the Sea Gulls got on the board midway through the first. Amherst's Mitch Likins made back-to-back saves but the offense came working the ball around to find space. Brice Bromwell fed Luke Nestor, who beat Likins five-hole for the first goal of the contest.
- Nestor's goal sparked a five-goal run for the Sea Gulls. Isaac Thrasher with a door-step goal followed by another five-hole goal by Cross Ferrara, a Josh Sanchez snipe and a tight-angle goal from Bromwell put the Sea Gulls up five at the end of one.
- The Mammoths broke the zero in their score column with a three-goal run that nearly lasted the entire second quarter. Jake Bennett scored back-to-back goals and a Dylan Hsu goal closed out the run with four minutes left in the second to trim the SU lead to 5-3.
- Jack Dowd broke the scoring drought with just over a minute left in the first half to send the Sea Gulls to the halftime locker room up three, 6-3.
- Amherst's Thomas Ehret opened the second half with a goal a minute in but the goal sparked a 6-1 scoring run for Salisbury to push the lead to 12-5.
- A Brady Mancha transition goal sparked the run followed by goals by Jude Brown and Thrasher that extended the lead.
- Ehret netted another goal for the Mammoths before a Nestor goal and back-to-back Ferrara goals allowed the Sea Gulls to head into the fourth with the 12-5 lead.
- Nestor netted his hat trick to open the fourth quarter and gave the Sea Gulls' their largest lead of the game, 13-5.
- The Mammoths would not go down without a fight. Using their faceoff and possession edge, the Mammoths got out on a 5-0 run to cut the Sea Gull lead down to three, 13-10, with just under four minutes to go in regulation.
- However, the Sea Gulls stood tall and Nicholas Ransom made a big save which led to Ferrara icing the game with a man-up goal in the final minute of the game.
