DeFazio, Strong defense propels No. 2 Men’s Lacrosse to CLC Championship over No. 4 CNU, 9-4

SALISBURY, Md.  – It was a defensive struggle throughout the inaugural Coastal Lacrosse Conference (CLC) Championship Game. However, the second-ranked and top-seeded Salisbury University men's lacrosse team came through and pulled away from the fourth-ranked and second-seeded Christopher Newport Captains in the second half to secure a 9-4 victory on Sunday to collect the conference crown.

Sunday's win is Salisbury's sixth consecutive and 25th conference championship in program history. Salisbury will enter the 2023 NCAA Tournament with an 18-1 overall record.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CNU held the early lead with an Andrew Cook goal in the first three minutes of the contest.
  • A Jack Dowd strike from Jude Brown knotted the game at 1-1 five minutes into the game,
  • After some great defense from both sides, the Captains retook the lead after a Robby Adams goal with 12:43 remaining in the second quarter.
  • Another long scoring drought for both teams ended when Brice Bromwell scored a goal from Dowd with less than a minute remaining in the first half to tie the game at two at the halftime break.
       
  • The Sea Gulls started to fire on offense with a two-goal run from Brown in the first five minutes of the second half to give the Sea Gulls their first lead of the game, 4-2.
       
  • The third-quarter run continued with a goal by Joe Carozza and Bromwell to cap the four-goal run with the 6-2 lead.
  • Brett Jackson chipped into the SU lead, 6-3, with a goal with five seconds left in the third.
  • Salisbury continued its momentum into the final frame with another two-goal run with tallies from Dowd and Cross Ferrara that extended the lead to 8-3 midway through the fourth.
       
  • The Captains looked for a final push with a Jackson goal with five minutes left in the game. But, Salisbury used the clock to its advantage, Bromwell put away a man-up goal in the final minute of the game to ice the game and clinch the CLC Championship.
     
 
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • John DeFazio led the Sea Gulls defense with a career-high seven caused turnovers and also scooped up a team-high eight ground balls.
  • Salisbury held CNU to its lowest goal total since SU's 18-4 win over CNU on April 10, 2019.
  • The Sea Gull offense was led by Jude Brown and Brice Bromwell who both finished with five points. Brown scored two goals and dished out three assists and Bromwell tallied a hat trick and added in two assists.
  • Jack Dowd finished with four points on two goals and two assists.
  • Cross Ferrara and Joe Carozza each tallied a goal. Ferrara is now just four points away from breaking Jason Coffman's record for most career points in SU history.
  • The Sea Gulls finished 5-of-17 in faceoffs. Blake Malamphy finished 5-of-16 from the faceoff X with three ground balls.
  • James Gilfillan, Zach Timmons and Jackson Woodward each caused a pair of CNU turnovers.  
  • Nicholas Ransom earned the win in net and recorded six saves.
 
CNU GAME NOTES
  • Colby Auslander and Brett Jackson led the Captain offense with two points each. Auslander finished with two assists and Jackson tallied two goals.
  • Andrew Cook and Robby Adams each added a goal.
  • CNU went 12-of-17 in faceoffs. Warner Cabaniss finished 12-of-17 for the Captains and scooped up a game-high nine ground balls.
  • Burke Widhelm and Mason Beckmeyer led the Captain defense with two caused turnovers each.
  • Zac Hanway started in net for the Captains and recorded 17 saves.
 
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls will await an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament with the selection show beginning at 9 p.m. on NCAA.com.
  • The NCAA Tournament begins with the first round on Wednesday, May 10 with the second and third rounds taking place on May 13-14.
