CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Securing consensus honors from both major voting organizations, first baseman
Danny Sheeler of the second-ranked Salisbury University baseball team has been named an
American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings NCAA Division III Fourth-Team All-American, as revealed on Thursday evening.
Â
Sheeler, a junior from Towson, Md., proved to be the lynchpin in a vaunted Sea Gull lineup all season, posting a .400/.518/.767 slash line with 14 doubles, one triple, 13 home runs, 53 RBIs, 49 runs scored, 13 steals and a 1.285 OPS through his first 41 games. He ranks top-40 in Division III in homers and slugging average, plus top-150 in batting average. Sheeler has also committed just one error at first base all season, posting a .997 fielding percentage in 350 chances.
Â
With 13 homers on the year, Sheeler is tied with teammate
Jacob Ference and 1998 SU slugger
Dave Westervelt for the most longballs in single-season program history. He also ranks inside the top 10 in single-season slugging percentage (.767), RBIs (53), walks (34) and total bases (115) with the chance to climb higher over at least two more games in 2023.
Â
Sheeler becomes a consensus Fourth-Team All-American after
earning the same honor from D3baseball.com on Wednesday. He was also a consensus First-Team All-Region V, Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Player of the Year and First-Team All-C2C.
Â
First awarded in 1949, the ABCA All-America Teams now recognize athletes from nine divisions of amateur baseball: NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, NJCAA Divisions I, II and III, the Pacific Association Division and high school.
Â
Sheeler and the Sea Gulls open play at their third straight NCAA Division III Baseball Championship against 19th-ranked East Texas Baptist on Friday at 5:30 p.m. EDT (4:30 p.m. CDT).
