Floyd’s goal, strong defense highlight Men’s Soccer’s season-opening draw with Rowan

SALISBURY, Md.Alex Floyd's opening tally of the season helped the Salisbury University men's soccer tie battled to a 1-1 draw with the Rowan Profs to open the annual Elmer Lord Classic on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rowan made the first offensive attempt in the game when Mason Martelloni took a shot in the fourth minute that was saved by Skyler McCarthy.
  • The Sea Gulls responded with a shot of their own in the fifth minute as David Peters' attempt was saved by Dylan Aportela.
  • Alex Floyd got the scoring going in the 16th minute. Joseph Ennis' shot off a corner kick was initially blocked by congestion in front of the cage but Floyd was able to corral the loose ball and net the first goal at the newly christened Gerry DiBartolo Soccer Complex.
  • The Profs responded in the 29th minute when Johnny Troiano's shot off the crossbar wasn't cleared out and Davide Caputo sent a 20-yard shot in the upper corner to tie the game.
  • The two teams battled for possession throughout the rest of the first half. The two defenses buckled down in the second half with no team getting a clear shot on target.
  • The match ended with excitement as Rowan had a corner kick with under 30 seconds to go, but the Profs were unable to capitalize.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Salisbury took seven shots, putting four on target.
  • Alex Floyd scored his second career goal with his tally in the first half.
  • Joseph Ennas notched his third career assist on Floyd's goal.
  • Skyler McCarthy made four stops in goal.
ROWAN GAME NOTES
  • The Profs outshot the Sea Gulls, 14-7.
  • Rowan earned nine corner kicks.
  • Davide Caputo scored and Johnny Troiano picked up an assist.
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls conclude the Elmer Lord Classic against the King's College Monarchs.
  • Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Gerry DiBartolo Sea Gull Soccer Complex.
