SALISBURY, Md. – Down 2-0 early in the second half, the Salisbury University men's soccer team scored two goals in nine minutes to tie it, but the second-ranked Mary Washington Eagles used Josh Kirkland's game-winner with seven minutes left to escape with a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon at the Gerry DiBartolo Sea Gull Soccer Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams quickly battled it out to open the contest. Mary Washington got the upper hand first as Sammy Amorose scored in the 14th minute from a free kick that managed to get by Salisbury Sea Gull keeper Josh Wendel, and the Eagles entered halftime with a 1-0 lead despite a plethora of chances by both squads.
- Unlike the start of the game, the start to the second half was much slower for both teams. Eventually UMW got the offense going again as Amarose scored his second goal of the match in the 61st minute on a penalty kick after a Sea Gull foul.
- Going down 2-0 lit a fire under Salisbury, as two minutes later Aden Sabur, working against the Eagle defense, launched a shot that UMW keeper Fred Rogers couldn't reach, resulting in a Sea Gull goal to make the score 2-1.
- The Sea Gulls were still determined to come back against the Eagles, and in the 72nd minute they took the opportunity. Fresh off Senior Day festivities, Conner Appleby stepped up to draw a penalty kick and sent it to the lower left edge of the goal while Rogers dove to the right, tying the contest at 2-2.
- Mary Washington proved determined to leave Salisbury with a win, though. With just under seven minutes left in the contest, Josh Kirkland took advantage of a miscue by the Sea Gull defense to score on an open net to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
- The Sea Gulls were unable to get any offense started following the Eagles' goal and the match ended with a 3-2 margin for the Eagles.
