Women’s Basketball drops decision to Randolph-Macon

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team endured a 58-45 setback at the hands of the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets on Wednesday evening at the Maggs Physical Activities Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Yellow Jackets netted the game's first seven points, with a Juliana Park three-pointer at the 6:44 mark of the first quarter capping the initial spurt. Tatiana Virata answered for the Sea Gulls with a three-point play to make it 7-3 at the 5:41 mark.
  • RMC built the lead as large as 13 in the opening session, but four straight points from Kayla Nieberlein got SU back within 19-10 at the end of the first.
  • In a low-scoring second quarter, the Yellow Jackets built their lead to 25-10 with 3:47 until halftime. Cora Shafer got SU on the board in the period with a triple at the 2:25 mark. Virata knocked down a pair of free throws inside the final minute, but Sam Smith answered with a trey at the buzzer to make it 28-15 RMC at the break.
  • The teams traded blows early in the third quarter. Up 34-21, Emily Crouthamel nailed a three and Jane Elkins followed up with a free throw moments later to give the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at 38-21 halfway through the period.
  • Virata's three-point play got SU back within 38-24, and the teams exchanged baskets through the rest of the period, with RMC taking a 44-29 lead into the fourth.
  • RMC pushed the lead as high as 23 points in the fourth quarter, using a Smith triple to go up 54-31 with 5:52 to go.
  • From there the Sea Gulls went on an 11-0 run to cut the deficit nearly in half. Nicole Miller accounted for five of the points, and Sym Deloatch capped the flourish with a free throw to make it 54-42.
  • It was too little, too late, though, as the Yellow Jackets ran out the clock and left town with a 58-45 margin.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Tatiana Virata netted a career-high 11 points to lead the Sea Gull attack. Virata shot 2-of-3 from the floor and made 7-of-8 from the charity stripe to go along with seven rebounds and two assists.
  • Nicole Miller chipped in seven points, while Kayla Nieberlein added six points with seven boards.
  • Tori Rumbaugh matched a season high by dishing out six assists.
  • The Sea Gulls shot 29.4 percent (15-of-51) from the floor and 55 percent (11-of-20) from the free throw line.
  • SU equaled the Yellow Jackets with 43 rebounds in the game.
RANDOLPH-MACON GAME NOTES
  • Jane Elkins notched a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
  • Juliana Park contributed 13 points with six boards, while Sam Smith posted a well-rounded line of 12 points, six rebounds, and six assists.
  • The Yellow Jackets converted 34.4 percent (22-of-64) of their field goal attempts, going 8-of-22 (36.4 percent) from deep and 6-of-12 (50 percent) from the line.
  • RMC edged out SU on the offensive glass, 13-10.
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls will host Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) rival Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff from Maggs PAC is set for 1 p.m.
  • The game will serve as Salisbury's Play4Kay game to support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
