Women’s Basketball bounced by Mary Washington

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team drew the short end of a 62-42 decision at the hands of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) rival Mary Washington Eagles on Saturday afternoon at the Maggs Physical Activities Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After the Eagles netted the first four points of the game, Hailey Ader got the Sea Gulls on the board with two free throws at the 6:52 mark of the first quarter. From there UMW went on a 7-0 run before Abby Plaugher knocked down a three-pointer to get SU within 11-5 with 4:07 to go.
  • UMW nudged its lead to 20-7 in the final minute in the first, but two Tori Rumbaugh free throws got it to 20-9. The Eagles countered when Adeline Riner drained a triple to beat the buzzer, making it 23-9 at the end of the first.
  • After an SU free throw to break the ice in the second quarter, UMW scored the next six points to go up 29-10. Cora Shafer answered with a layup, and Nicole Miller hit a trey moments later to get the Sea Gulls within 29-15 at the 4:17 mark.
  • Trailing 34-17 in the final seconds of the period, Shafer beat the buzzer with a jump shot to bring the margin to 34-19 at the half.
  • The Eagles hit a free throw to open the scoring in the third quarter, and Rumbaugh punched back with a three at the 6:55 mark to cut the SU deficit to 35-22.
  • Salisbury kept the margin at 13 points for the next two minutes before UMW went on an 8-0 run to go up 47-26. A Kayla Nieberlein bucket with a minute to go made it 47-28 at the end of the third.
  • UMW led by as many as 24 points in the fourth quarter before Plaugher hit two free throws and drained a last-minute layup, giving the game its final 62-42 margin.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Hailey Ader shared the team lead with 10 points, going 6-of-9 from the free-throw line, to go along with five rebounds and three blocks.
  • Abby Plaugher netted 10 points of her own, shooting 2-of-5 from deep.
  • Tori Rumbaugh and Nicole Miller chipped in six points apiece. Rumbaugh added five boards and grabbed four steals.
  • Cora Shafer hauled in a team-high seven rebounds.
  • The Sea Gulls shot 23.9 percent (11-of-46) from the floor and went 15-of-25 (60 percent) from the charity stripe.
  • SU blocked six shots on the day, one shy of its season high.
MARY WASHINGTON GAME NOTES
  • Jordan Carpenter posted a double-double with 12 points (5-of-12) and 12 rebounds, plus four assists, two blocks, and two steals.
  • Sydney Sherman matched Carpenter on the scoreboard with 12 points.
  • Ashley Martin went for 10 points and six boards, while Adeline Riner added 10 points and five rebounds.
  • The Eagles connected on 36.5 percent (23-of-63) of their shots and went 14-of-24 (58.3 percent) from the line.
  • UMW outrebounded the Sea Gulls 45-39, including 17-11 on the offensive glass.
  • The Eagles swiped 14 steals on the day with five players grabbing multiple steals.
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls will head north for their penultimate game of the regular season against Lancaster Bible next Saturday afternoon.
  • Tipoff from Lancaster, Pa., is slated for 1 p.m.
