Women’s Soccer handles Regent; Wheeler nets brace in win

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team collected its second consecutive win on Saturday afternoon, using a pair of finishes from Ava Wheeler to help power a 3-0 victory over the Regent University Royals in the team's Pink Game for cancer awareness at the Gerry DiBartolo Sea Gull Soccer Complex.

The Sea Gulls (5-3-6) opened the scoring in the 40th minute when Olivia Pasko slipped a pass through the Royal backline to Wheeler in the box, who neatly tucked the ball into the opposite corner to open a 1-0 advantage that carried the hosts through to intermission.

The Royals (2-8) held strong in the opening minutes of the second period, but a two-goal flurry for the maroon and gold provided the cushion. Kristen Ging assisted a pair of finishes for Ashley Pantano in the 61st minute and Wheeler in the 63rd, setting the score that held until the final horn.

GAME NOTES
  • With Saturday's brace, Ava Wheeler has tallied four goals in her last three matches including the game-winner against the Royals. Her five goals in 2024 mark a new career-high for the sophomore, bringing her scoring total to nine across 33 appearances as a Sea Gull.
  • Kristen Ging collected a pair of assists to bring her season total to four, a career-high for the senior. Ging has tallied 21 points on seven goals and seven assists as a Sea Gull.
  • Across 19 matches in 2023, Ashley Pantano recorded four goals and two assists while putting 14 of her 43 shots on target. The junior has replicated that line in five fewer matches this season, boasting four goals and a pair of helpers while putting 13 of her 43 looks on target after Saturday's result.
  • Olivia Pasko recorded her first collegiate point on Saturday, aiding Wheeler's game-winner in the first half for her first assist as a Sea Gull.
  • The Sea Gulls placed 20 shots on target in the win, good for the most in a single match since the team registered 21 accurate attempts in last season's opener against Greensboro on Sept. 1, 2023. Saturday marks the third time the team has placed 20 or more shots on goal since 2020.
The Sea Gulls continue a four-match home stand on Wednesday, Oct. 16 against the visiting Hood College Blazers. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. from the DiBartolo Soccer Complex.
