Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Nick Lewis

Early onslaught not enough for Men’s Soccer in loss at No. 1 UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men's soccer team took a two-goal lead over the top-ranked Eagles of Mary Washington, but ultimately fell by a 3-2 decision on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

The Sea Gulls (5-7-3) struck early in the match when a scrum in the box left the ball up for grabs. Peter Beil stepped to and punched his first shot home, helping his side establish a 1-0 advantage in the fifth minute.

Salisbury struck again in the 22nd minute when Gavin Miller cut to his left and fired a near-side screamer that just snuck under the crossbar, putting the Sea Gulls in front by a pair.

The Eagles (15-0-1) began their comeback less than four minutes later when Carter Berg and Sammy Amorose connected for the team's first score of the day. Salisbury forced a pair of saves by the Eagles net-minder, but the score held at intermission, 2-1.

The hosts tied the match in the 61st minute when Gabe Francesconi found Jordy Santana for the equalizer. The connection from Berg to Amorose flipped in the 68th minute, with the latter assisting the former on the game-winner.
