Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – With just 30 seconds left in the match, the Salisbury University men's soccer team broke a scoreless tie against Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) rival Christopher Newport with a free-kick finish, but the hosting Captains scored with just 10 grains of sand left in the hourglass to send both sides home from Newport News, Va. with a tie on Wednesday evening.
The Sea Gulls (5-7-4) and Captains (5-5-5) each took seven shots and put three shots on target in the opening half, with the hosts drawing the edge in corner opportunities, 7-3. Despite the chances, the teams went into the break in a 0-0 deadlock.
After a contentious second half, the Sea Gulls finally found their breakthrough.
Gavin Miller stepped in to take a free kick in the 89th minute, placing his attempt perfectly past the Captain keeper to give the maroon and gold a 1-0 lead.
Not 20 seconds later, the Captains penned their response, with Drew McWhinney depositing a loose ball in the box into the onion bag to bring the match back level in the dying seconds, 1-1. The score would hold through the final seconds to become final.
GAME NOTES
- Gavin Miller netted his fourth free-kick finish of the 2024 campaign and his sixth overall goal in the draw.
- Brady Young finished just behind Miller with three shots in the match, including one on goal.
- Josh Wendel performed well in goal despite the result, turning away eight Captain attempts across the full 90 minutes.
