SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 9 Salisbury University football program took down NJAC rival Christopher Newport University 42-38 Saturday night under the lights inside Sea Gull Stadium. The game tallied 11 lead changes as the NJAC powerhouses traded blows in both teams' conference openers.
The Sea Gulls (4-0, 1-0 NJAC) started the scoring on their first offensive possession of the game as
Michael Cox punched it in from one yard out. The Captains (2-2, 0-1 NJAC) responded with a 65-yard touchdown pass but missed the extra point making it a 7-6 Salisbury lead.
CNU took the lead with 3:17 remaining before halftime 13-7 but Salisbury answered quickly as this time it was
Ronald Clark punching it in from four yards out. The Captains tacked on a field goal taking a 16-14 lead into the halftime break.
The offenses came alive in the second half as once again the Sea Gulls scored on their opening possession of the half. This time it was the passing game as
Gage Katzenell-Hall found
Dario Belizaire for a 35-yard touchdown pass.
After CNU regained the lead,
Jaden Davis scampered from 18 yards out giving Salisbury a 28-23 advantage heading into the final quarter of action. After falling down 31-28, the Sea Gulls drove right back down the field and
Katzenell-Hall added a rushing touchdown to his night regaining the lead 35-31.
CNU once again answered with a touchdown. Salisbury trailed 38-35 getting the ball with 4:48 remaining in the ballgame. The Sea Gulls scored in just over two minutes as once again
Belizaire found the end zone after
Katzenell-Hall launched a deep ball down the sideline for a 48-yard touchdown.
The Captains drove all the way down to the Sea Gull 30-yard line trailing 42-38. The Sea Gull Stadium home crowd helped the defense pick up a fourth down stop to seal the victory.
The Sea Gulls have won eight of the last 10 match ups against the Captains.
