Women’s Basketball falls to Washington (Md.) in Messiah Tournament

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team wrapped up its stay at the Messiah Tip-Off Tournament with a 56-44 loss to the Washington College Shorewomen on Saturday afternoon at Hitchcock Arena.
 
The Sea Gull started slowly from the field, conceding the game's first six points and facing a 12-4 deficit at the end of the first quarter. In the second, Alex Bull hit a quick three and two free throws to get SU within 12-9, but the Shorewomen closed out the period on a 12-2 run to enter halftime ahead 24-11.
 
Salisbury played physical inside during the third quarter and shot 8-of-12 from the free throw line to keep pace with WAC and face a 41-25 hole. SU then won the fourth quarter 19-15, knocking down 3-of-5 three-pointers, including back-to-back late treys by Nicole Miller, to give the game its final 56-44 margin.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Nicole Miller paced the Sea Gulls with 16 points, shooting 5-of-10 from the field and 4-of-6 from distance.
  • Alex Bull posted well-rounded numbers in 38 minutes of action, scoring nine points with six rebounds and two assists.
  • Kayla Nieberlein posted seven points and hauled in seven rebounds.
  • The Sea Gulls shot 25 percent (11-of-44) overall, going 6-of-18 (33.3 percent) from deep and 16-of-22 (72.7 percent) from the free throw line.
  • Salisbury won the offensive rebounding battle 9-7, trailing overall in rebounds just 30-28. SU also forced 22 Shorewomen turnovers.
 
The Sea Gulls return to action on Wednesday with a home contest against St. Mary's (Md.). Opening tipoff from the Maggs Physical Activities Center is slated for 6 p.m.
