CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team fell in the season opener, dropping a 50-39 decision on the road against Eastern Shore foe Washington (Md.) on Saturday afternoon.
Alex Bull netted Salisbury's first points of the season, answering an early Shorewoman score to tie the game before a pair of free throws by
Remy Tolar gave SU a 4-2 lead. Washington responded with an 8-2 run, taking a four-point lead before Tolar outpaced the hosts 3-2 to cut into the lead at the end of the period, 12-9.
Kisa Lilly and Tolar scored consecutive baskets to slice the gap to one, 14-13, with five minutes left in the half. The Sea Gulls nabbed the lead on a three-ball from
Ella Inacio, 16-15, but the Shorewomen closed the period with eight consecutive points to lead at the break, 23-16.
Washington led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, but the Sea Gulls rallied in the closing minutes.
Nicole Miller buried a three-pointer to open the run before
Abby Plaugher followed suit, with Miller closing the period with a second basket to shrink the deficit to six through 30 minutes, 35-29.
The Shorewomen kept a Salisbury rally at bay late, outscoring SU 15-10 in the final quarter to set the final score, 50-39. Plaugher tallied five points in the final frame to lead the offense.
GAME NOTES
- Abby Plaugher scored a team-high eight points, sinking two threes and hauling in six rebounds.
- Kisa Lilly and Remy Tolar each scored seven points and hauled in three rebounds in their collegiate debuts.
- Jen Juhring led the team with a career-high nine rebounds in the contest.
- Alex Bull brought in five rebounds and swiped a team-high four steals.
The Sea Gulls debut in front of the Salisbury faithful on Tuesday, Nov. 12th, playing the first game of a twin bill against the Notre Dame (Md.) Gators at 6 p.m. inside Maggs Gymnasium.
