SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team sent its seniors
Hailey Ader and
Sym Deloatch out with a victory in their final home contest, grinding out a 62-44 victory over the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins by a 62-44 final on Friday evening at Maggs Physical Activities Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Points were hard to come by in the opening minutes. Tori Rumbaugh found Ader in the paint on the opening possession for the game's first points, which were parried by a Griffin three-pointer. Rumbaugh connected from range less than a minute later to establish a 5-3 Sea Gull lead.
- Kayla Nieberlein then shook free for a lay-in to maintain what became a 9-0 run for the maroon and gold. The visitors converted a three-point play before Nicole Miller and Abby Plaugher combined for a 7-0 swing to close the quarter and extend the lead, to 18-6.
- The Griffins netted six straight and 11 of the next 13 points to tighten the gap to three, 20-17, with just under four minutes left in the first half. Plaugher fired from range to fend off the rally, but an and-one opportunity brought Gwynedd Mercy back within one possession, 23-20.
- The Sea Gulls found their footing, claiming eight of the half's final nine points to tote a 31-21 advantage into the locker room.
- Jen Juhring extended the SU lead out of the break, finding nylon to push the lead to 12. After trading baskets with Salisbury, the Griffins pieced together a 7-2 run to bring the score within five, 37-32 with just over 17 minutes remaining in the affair.
- After splitting the final four points of the third, the Sea Gulls garnered eight consecutive points and 13 of 17 through the first five minutes of the fourth. Salisbury held the Griffins at arms-length in the home stretch, outpacing the guests 10-6 to stamp the 62-44 triumph.
