NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The fourth-seeded Salisbury University women's basketball team won its season-high third straight game and advanced to the semifinals of the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Tournament, dispatching the fifth-seeded Mount Mary Blue Angels, 81-50, in the first round on Thursday evening at the Freeman Center on the campus of Christopher Newport University.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Sea Gulls opened on a torrid 8-0 run through the first two-plus minutes of the first quarter. After MMU finally answered with a bucket, Abby Plaugher drilled a three-pointer and followed up with a jumper that put SU on top 13-2 at the 5:26 mark.
- Salisbury opened up a lead as large as 16 in the opening session after a Nicole Miller triple made it 24-8 and took a 24-10 lead out of the first 10 minutes.
- After maintaining a comfortable lead for the early part of the second quarter, the Sea Gulls got the lead over the 20-point hump in the final minute-plus before halftime. Up 39-23 at the 1:25 mark, Tori Rumbaugh sank a layup, followed by a jay from Hailey Ader and a Tatiana Virata layup that got the margin up to 45-23 at the break.
- Cora Shafer converted a layup at the 4:57 mark of the third quarter that capped an 11-5 push and built the SU margin to 56-28. The Blue Angels got it back to 58-36 in the final minute of the period, but a Rumbaugh trey gave the Sea Gulls a 61-36 advantage through three.
- The teams boxed evenly through the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter, but a Shafer triple got the Salisbury lead into 30-point territory at 77-47. SU led by as many as 32 in the final session and salted away an 81-50 margin of victory to cruise into the second round.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
- Nicole Miller led a balanced Sea Gull attack with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Miller also brought down three rebounds and dished out two assists.
- Cora Shafer contributed 15 points, shooting 7-of-10 from the field, with four boards.
- Abby Plaugher made it four SU players in double digits with 10 points.
- Hailey Ader and Tori Rumbaugh each approached triple-doubles with well-balanced stat sheets. Ader posted eight points with eight rebounds and six assists, while Rumbaugh went for eight points with eight assists and six steals.
- Kayla Nieberlein added eight points with five rebounds, while Jen Juhring chipped in seven points with seven boards.
- The Sea Gulls shot 48.5 percent (33-of-68) from the floor and 7-of-11 (63.6 percent) from the charity stripe.
- SU outrebounded the Blue Angels 44-30 overall and 13-5 on the offensive glass.
- Salisbury assisted on 26 of its 33 made field goals, over half of which came from Rumbaugh and Ader.
- The Sea Gulls ripped a season-high 17 steals and won the turnover battle 24-15.
- SU's three-game winning streak is its longest of the season and longest since taking seven straight from Jan. 26 to Feb. 16, 2022.
MOUNT MARY GAME NOTES
- Brianna Mendez led the Blue Angels with 12 points and five rebounds.
- Na'Zyia Bobo notched nine points off the bench, while Deja Rivers chipped in eight.
- The Blue Angels shot 35.8 (19-of-53) from the floor and 6-of-16 (37.5 percent) from distance.
