FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The third-seeded Salisbury University men's basketball team advanced to Friday's Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Tournament semifinal game with an 89-67 victory over sixth-seeded Warren Wilson on Thursday evening at the William M. Anderson Center. Senior forward
Jordan Oates became the 34th player in program history to top 1,000 career points in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The sides prodded one another to begin the quarterfinal contest. Jordan Oates nabbed an offensive board and laid it in to ignite a 9-4 start to the game for Salisbury spanning the first four minutes.
- Warren Wilson scored four unanswered points to bring the contest within one, 9-8. The Sea Gulls penned a 16-0 response, taking a commanding 25-8 advantage with just over eight minutes left in the half.
- Salisbury dominated the remainder of the period, keeping no less than 12 points between themselves and Warren Wilson across the final eight minutes and winding the half down with an 8-3 swing to secure a 46-27 halftime margin.
- Kaiden Mines had the hot hand to begin the second half, scoring six of SU's 11 points across the first four minutes. The Owls hung with the Salisbury offense and began to rally, unfurling a 15-3 run that cut the margin down to 60-49 with 12 minutes left.
- Oates kickstarted a 15-0 Sea Gull stretch, scoring a feed from Cameron Heard before three-pointers from Mines and Brendan Davis extended the run. Reed Rebstock put back an offensive board before Oates sank a pull-up midrange jumper to secure his 1,000th and 1,001st career points. When the dust settled, the Sea Gulls led 75-49 with just under nine minutes remaining.
- Warren Wilson scored nine in a row before baskets from Calvin Thomas and Andrew Silver quelled the surge. The Owls paired two layups to cut the margin to 18, 80-62, with just under three minutes left.
- Elijah Bryan, Spencer Saar, and Patrick Wynne combined to close the contest on a 7-2 run, locking down the 89-67 victory.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
- Jordan Oates collected his seventh double-double in his last eight games, scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds while eclipsing the 1,000-point threshold. Oates is the first Sea Gull to reach the milestone since Gary Briddell '22, who ranks 12th on the all-time scorers list at SU.
- Kaiden Mines netted a career-high 25 points while burying seven three-pointers to headline the Salisbury offense.
- Reed Rebstock was wildly efficient for the Sea Gulls, scoring 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting while hauling in six boards and dishing out three assists.
- Brendan Davis finished third in the Salisbury scoring column with 14 points while passing out a game-high six assists. He added three rebounds in the win.
- Calvin Thomas grabbed six rebounds and added four points.
- Cameron Heard tallied five assists in the winning effort.
- The Sea Gulls shot 49.3 percent (35-of-71) from the floor, 45.2 percent (14-of-31) from beyond the arc, and made five of their six attempts from the free-throw line.
- Salisbury outrebounded the Owls 44-25 and got 51 points from the bench on Thursday evening.
WARREN WILSON GAME NOTES
- Four Owls reached double-digits, led by 12-point showings from Antonio Banuelos and Marcus Andrews. Banuelos added five rebounds and four assists, while Andrews tacked on three steals and two boards.
- Yoshi Kendrick finished with 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Dylan Wheatley added 10 points and three steals to round out the double-digit scorers.
- Nasir Cotton dropped nine points while tying for a team-high five boards.
- The Owls shot 47.5 percent (28-of-59) from the floor, 40 percent (10-of-25) from distance, and made one of their four attempts at the charity stripe.
