Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball sees season wrapped by UMW in C2C Semifinal

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team saw its 2023-24 campaign ended by second-seeded Mary Washington on Friday evening, falling 80-60 in the semifinals of the 2024 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Tournament at the William M. Anderson Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jordan Oates scored the night's first points, returning his own miss to the bottom of the basket with just over a minute played. The Eagles responded by scoring 11 of the next 13 points, taking an 11-4 lead through six minutes.
  • Brendan Davis snapped the scoring drought, sinking a layup to slice the margin to five, but UMW scored nine of the next 12 to extend the lead to 20-9 at the midway point of the period.
  • An Oates triple could not counter the three-point barrage that the Eagles produced across the next four minutes. UMW netted 12 straight points to push the margin to 20, 32-12, with just under four and a half minutes left in the half.
  • Oates and Cameron Heard combined for 10 points as the half ticked down, but the Eagles matched the total to keep the margin intact and take a 42-22 lead into the locker room.
  • The Mary Washington offense continued to hum in the second half. The Sea Gulls sank 50 percent of their shots in the first five minutes of the second half but could only manage to keep pace with the Eagles in a 52-32 contest.
  • UMW pulled ahead by as much as 28 points in the second half. The Sea Gulls narrowed the gap to 20 once more, but the Eagles maintained control of the contest late to send Salisbury home by the eventual 80-60 final score.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Jordan Oates closed the campaign in fitting fashion, collecting his 15th double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds on Saturday. Oates climbed to 30th in program history in scoring, finishing the evening with 1,018 career points to surpass Ed Jones '85 in the record book.
  • Brendan Davis finished with 11 points and added pairs of rebounds and assists.
  • Cameron Heard and Kaiden Mines each added six points. Heard tacked on three rebounds as well.
  • The Sea Gulls shot 40 percent (22-of-55) from the floor, made five three-pointers, and hit 11 of their 19 shots from the free-throw line.
UMW GAME NOTES
  • Zack Blue and Dorian Davis headlined the Eagle offense, combining for 38 points and eight three-pointers.
  • Matias Prock added 14 points and four rebounds on the night.
  • Cameron McCravy dropped 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers.
  • The Eagles shot 52.7 percent (29-of-55) from the field, 50 percent (11-of-22) from three-point range, and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the charity stripe.
THE WRAP
  • The Sea Gulls finish the season at 14-13 overall, good for the most wins in a single season under head coach Maurice Williams and his first winning season apart from the COVID-shortened 2020-21 campaign. Salisbury earned a berth in the C2C semifinals and picked up notable wins against Gettysburg and No. 20 Christopher Newport along the way.
