Men’s Basketball clipped by Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University men's basketball team dropped a 75-63 decision to Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) opponent Christopher Newport on Saturday evening at the Freeman Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Captains set the tempo in the early minutes, scoring 14 of the game's first 16 points to lead 14-2 with 11:29 remaining in the first half. Brendan Davis helped Salisbury swing the momentum back, scoring five straight points to ignite a 7-1 run that narrowed the gap to six, 15-9, with just over eight minutes to go in the period.
  • After four straight Christopher Newport points, Jordan Oates found his first bucket to snap the run. Reed Rebstock answered a CNU score with a three-point play of his own, which Oates followed with a three-ball to slice the margin to three, 20-17, with just under five minutes remaining.
  • The C2C foes traded blows over the next two minutes, splitting the span even and giving the hosts a 26-23 lead. A 10-1 CNU swing pushed the margin to double digits, 36-24, through the opening 20 minutes.
  • CNU held Salisbury at bay to begin the second half as the sides split the first 20 points of the period, 10-10. A 7-0 run in the following minutes put the Captains ahead 53-34 with 12 minutes to go.
  • Salisbury put together a late surge, using an 11-4 run to tighten the score to 57-45 three minutes later. The Captains scored five of the next seven to cushion their advantage, 62-47.
  • An 8-2 Sea Gull swing brought the maroon and gold within single digits, 64-55. A pair of CNU trips to the charity stripe pushed the lead back to 13, 68-55, with four minutes to go. Salisbury outscored the Captains in the final minutes, 8-7, but ultimately fell by a 75-63 final.
